  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • i was interested in seeing how management of retail took place. i was shown each sector of the store individually and met several members of staff. i had regular interactions with my supervisor and was given a good idea on what it is like to work in the retail industry on a daily basis. i felt like i was given my own responsibilities and i was fully immersed in the work, just like a regular employee.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • i enhanced my communication skills immensely as when you are part of a big cooperation it is important to be able to communicate with your colleagues. in retail it is also important to be able to communicate with the customers to ensure that they have the best experience. i also built on my team working skills which is easily transferable to the career i end up working in.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Tesco?
  • i felt like i was treated fairly by my colleagues. i was involved in many of the tasks and i felt like i was appreciated by any staff that i came in to contact with. i got recognition for the effort i put in; this is essential to motivate the people who help a business function well. my supervisor was very encouraging and praised me for the work i did.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • my programme was very well thought out and was well structured. it was clear from the induction what i had to do and the skills i acquired were developed slowly as programme progressed. i feel as though the business hierarchy was very well organised which meant i knew who i should talk to whenever a problem that i couldn't solve arose.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • my supervisor was extremely helpful and supportive in my programme. at the beginning they walked me through every task i had to complete and once i had found my feet they stepped back and encouraged me to work independently. i never felt like i couldn't talk to them about an issue because they were very approachable and made an effort to make sure i was excelling.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • i rarely had contact with the manager, but the rest of the team around me were extremely helpful and supportive. for example, a challenge arose when i was completing a task and an employee came to help me so i could progress instead of leaving me behind. i felt like i was part of the team and i really appreciate their support and their patience that they had with me.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • it met my costs well as i never felt that i needed any more money than i had. i feel like the money i got was sufficient considering the work i was doing for them. i would however suggest that the salary could be raised so employees have more money to support themselves while in the programme.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • there were not many opportunities outside of work but there were a few company events from time to time. i tried to involve myself in as many opportunities outside of work that i could. i felt like the out of work opportunities added a great amount of positive memories to my overall experience.

  • 9. Would you recommend Tesco to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • i think that the skills that i learnt were invaluable and i think that i can transfer many things that i learnt into my future career and into other aspects of my life such as my social life. i also believe there was a good financial incentive to do the programme. i would recommend this programme to anyone who is interested in a career in retail.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tesco?
  • be open in your interviews and assessments as an important part of the job is to have good communication skills and to be approachable. i would also recommend getting as stuck in as you can because it is as enjoyable as you want to make it. in other words, you get out what you put in. it is important to be enthusiastic and willing to learn to succeed in the programme.
