  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • When I started work at aldi, I was quite looking forward to my day-to-day job and work since I had only ever been at school and done a paper round before. Although I knew that this work was voluntary and un-paid I was looking forward to the experience, meeting new people and also learning new skills with this type of work (which was supermarket work). It's wasn't the most interesting and thrilling but I was happy to do it.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • When in Aldi I learnt about the business as a whole and how the business works with the integration of employees and staff working with customers and helping their customers as well as getting experience on a till and helping out with stocking the shelves and checking for any problems within the store too. I was able to improve my skills with customers too as I spent a day on the customer service desk too helping out.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed my programme to an extent. Everyone was really friendly and had time to talk to me and ask about what I was doing at school and if I was going to university etc. I liked the new skills I got whilst working there and I would definitely consider going back and working there again if I was given the opportunity. I think that I got the best experience I could have from working at Aldi.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Aldi?
  • I felt fairly valued by the team since they put effort into getting to know me and also putting me in different areas of the store rather than plonking me in one place for the week! I think that a couple of staff members there were asked to look after me which was nice of the manager to do however I did not see the store manager at all during my visit, only the supervisors and immediate staff members.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Fairly well structured. I rotated around the store and definitely had time in different areas however this was sort of as and when staff could tailor to me being with them. For example I was never on the tills when it was peak hours of the day and I rotated to other areas when they had staff on to train me and look after me rather than have me lend a hand when there was not many staff in that particular area.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received quite a lot of support off them. They always ensured I was looked after and was enjoying my time. they took time to ask me questions outside of Aldi and get to know about myself and where I was hoping to go in the future etc, and I was also able to have a bit of a laugh with them too which was always nice to have with a voluntary experience like I had. Very happy overall with my supervisor.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • With the store manager I didn't actually get a chance to speak to them. I had spoken on the phone and they were able to confirm I had a place and let me know where to come to when I came in on the Monday morning but after that I was left with one of the supervisors. I didn't expect to spend all week with the manager however a quick introduction would have been nice. I know they are very busy and may have had a lot of work on at the time.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I was not paid for this experience nor did I expect to be. I was happy that my week experience was voluntary as I wanted just the experience and knowledge from what it was like working there rather than any financial gain. I have seen a guide about salaries at Aldi, since I looked it up online previous to applying for a voluntary placement and I have no problem with what they have to offer.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I was not presented with any opportunities however I was asked if I wanted to go out on the Friday lunchtime with a couple of members of staff (I think they went every Friday lunchtime) so it was nice to feel inclusive this way. I wasn't however aware of any other opportunities although I did only spend a week in the store and it was very difficult to have anything planned with any particular workers as I moved around the store as well.

  • 9. Would you recommend Aldi to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Aldi, yes, because I think the supermarket I went too was very friendly and welcoming. I think I got a lot out of my short 1-week placement and I think it was good for a bit of experience too. I am unsure what the perks/benefits are for being a full-time staff member but online It looks quite promising. I wouldn't perhaps work at Aldi as a full-time job for life but I think it's good experience and nice to start off there when coming out of school etc.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aldi?
  • I would say to have a l9ook online beforehand about their prospects and what they have to offer since I made sure before I really wanted the experience from a store like that. I don't regret my decision and I ended up ringing the store and asking for assistance on work experience there. Overall I would say to have a few words written down on why you would like to work there and what you would like to get out of working there too.
