  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a medical student who was involved with a project called Ersaumus which is a 2 month apprenticeship of your choosing. What my daily tasks involved was taking clinical histories and preforming examinations on patients and trying to identify pathologies. I would regularly speak with doctors, nurses, physios and patients to see how each persons role in the healthcare system affects the patients.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have been able to see the different approaches of communicating with patients also I have been able to ask questions and work alongside patients finding our about their background history as well. This process has improved my overall history taking skills and I have been able to practice skills that I will need in my future career.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed this programme. I have been able to work with a well organised team and have had the pleasure of meeting new people and experiencing different cultures. I think my overall experience has meet my initial expectations. I felt the most enjoyable part of this experience was with the people who I had got to know and see work.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NHS?
  • I feel that I am a valued member of the team who I worked for. As the NHS is a very large government based company, I would say I am not as valued to the NHS as I was being part of a smaller unit and team. I hope eventually I will be able to work for the NHS in a more prominent role and make a bigger impact. However this will take time and I feel the more I continue on this path the more valued I will become.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel my programme is extremely well structured and I had been given a rota and a full introduction to the team and the people who were in charge of assisting me with this program. I was told if there were any issues I could contact the team and this gave me a nice reassurance from the offset. The general organisation of the place was quite good and the help I received for the initial few days made me feel welcomed.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I felt the support from my training provider was excellent and I felt the smooth running of my program should be largely credited to my training provider. The time and effort that the provider gave to me was good. The explanation of the forms to fill and the things I needed to do were also explained to me and I found it extremely helpful.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I felt the support from my employer was also excellent. The time and effort that my employer gave to me was also very good. The explanation of the forms to fill and the things I needed to do were also explained to me by my employer and I found it extremely helpful. My employer was also in contact with my training provider and so regular dialogue and updates with my progress was also looked into, which is always a good way to make sure that you are fulfilling the employers criteria as well as meeting the trainers requirements.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The package did not meet my costs as living expenses and food was quite expensive. I needed to delve into my own pocket for half of the stay. The travel costs were also quite expensive as the place I had my apprenticeship was in a remote rural area without too many transport links. The prices for day to day living expenses was also quite high.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There was a few opportunities to visit and see the tourist sights which I have never experienced before. I really enjoyed the climate and going to parks and long walks. Apart from this I was pretty occupied with the program and hence I could not experience too many opportunities outside the realms of work. The main objective was to experience the working conditions and the different approaches to the work lifestyle. I did not venture too much outside of this, possibly next time.

  • 9. Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • it is a huge employer and so job security will always be present. Working in the health sector has its benefits and it is extremely rewarding knowing that you are saving lives and looking after injured vulnerable people is extremely satisfying. There is also so much research that also needs to be looked into and new discoveries that are yet to be discovered so it is a worthwhile pursuit if one is interested

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
  • Definitely worth a shot and really enjoyable experience. Handwork but extremely rewarding. Not worth it if you are going for the money or for a financial gain, more for the overall experience and the satisfaction that you are working with a really dedicated team all fighting and working for th same cause which is to heal and make people better.
