  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Trauma and orthopaedic medicine and surgery. Involving seeing patients in clinics who were waiting for surgery as well as those post surgery for follow up. Also spending time in A&E dealing with fractures and more minor injuries that could be dealt with then and there.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Certainly. I learnt valuable skills in building rapport with patients and their relatives as well as building relationships within the staff team. It showed me how important team skills and cooperation are as well as the ability to lead and be responsible for making Decisions that have serious affects on all involved.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is hard work and demanding in many aspects: emotionally, physically and intellectually but the skills learnt are so valuable, because they translate into any job as well as every day life, that it is worth it. There are highs and lows like any programme but here you are always supported and never alone so it is a safe environment.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NHS?
  • There is a high demand of staff within the NHS and sadly the benefits of working with in it do not match what is required so sadly staff can feel undervalued and overworked. If the hours were more accommodating of having a private life as well as a working life then staff would feel more able to work efficiently and effectively.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well structured with adequate time spent with the different departments and staff involved in orthopaedics and trauma. It also allowed time for private study as well as time for teaching with staff, covering practical skills and developing academic knowledge.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received support from many departments and in many areas. I had technical support for IT usage, learning support from staff both clinical and academic and I had access to learning material in libraries as well as online. I was also advised that if I needed emotional support I could contact people and attend groups onsite.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I bwlivw that my current employer supports effectively and efficiently me in many different ways. Again I have technological support from IT. I have great support from training staff both onsite and offsite and access to learning materials too.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I encure a lot of expenses in my current employment but my company are very good at reimbursing me. However my non claimable expenses are sadly greater and unfortunately my salary is of a value that means I have to keep close track of my spending and limit my outgoings. It is difficult but manageable.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are opportunities to travel both in and out of the UK and also there is the chance to progress my career in different fields of the company and to whatever level I wish, be it entry level or with greater responsibility and demands. There are also regular opportunities to engage with staff and those not in the company outside of working hours and locations for social activities and events.

  • 9. Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company teaches many valuable skills and helps to develop qualities that are transferable into any field and the support is there for those who need it whenever and where ever but the benefits and the salary make for a very demanding and trying lifestyle which is difficult to endure.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
  • Ensure that you have the support of family and friends when applying and working for the NHS because when it gets tough you will need them to help you and keep you balanced. Also ensure that working for the NHS is something you are really passionate about because you will spend more time working than at home with family and friends.
