  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I was placed on the drive thru for most of tasks. Helping staff bag up meals and make up drinks orders. I also helped clean the area and hand out meals at the window. Finally on non drive thru days I was on the floor. Making sure the eating areas were clean and the bins were empty.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I was health and safety trained. I learnt problem solving and thinking quickly on my feet. I also learnt how to deal with difficult customers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The program itself was ok. But I would have liked more time to learn what was expected of me. I was thrown into the deep end and was expected to know everything after being told once. The staff did not like me making mistakes and I found it hard sometimes to understand when I could go on break or take a drink. Overall it was a program that taught me a lot but I know I will never go back there again. I am not good at physical work.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by McDonald's?
  • I was not valued highly due to the mistakes I made and the fact I was a little slow on occasions picking up new things. My performance was poorly rated and this effected my work eithic. However it is a two way process and I understand that if we had both tried harder then maybe I would have become more valued.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program was easy to follow and loosely structured. I was only given a few reparative tasks to do during my time there. The training was patchy in places and I had to learn on the job most times. In terms of health and safety training that was ok and done on time. The other stuff was lacking.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My training provider was my employer for this. Initially on my first day I was given quite a lot of support and was allowed to shadow other staff to understand what I would be doing. However after that day I was left more to my own devices and found it hard on occasions to know what to do in certain situations. I feel like maybe I needed more support.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Same as above: Initially on my first day I was given quite a lot of support and was allowed to shadow other staff to understand what I would be doing. However after that day I was left more to my own devices and found it hard on occasions to know what to do in certain situations. I feel like maybe I needed more support.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary package was ok but if I hadn't been living with my parents at the time I do not think it would have been enough for me to comfortably live on. It was just above minimum wage at the time for my age bracket and it did help me to meet certain costs that had started to come up in my life. If I had stayed longer however I think I would have struggled.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I am not sure of any opportunities outside of work for this. Maybe if I had stayed longer this would have been explained to me a bit more. There were opportunities to socialise with other staff members but as for career options and extra training I am unsure.

  • 9. Would you recommend McDonald's to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • Personally I have nothing against them, however I did not enjoy my experience there and that is why I would no recommend them. I would not put people off applying however, the interview process etc was good. But at the same time I cannot give an all round good report.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to McDonald's?
  • Make sure you do your research first and decide early on if you are able to do this sort of work. Try seeing if you can talk to staff at the restaurant you want to apply to and ask their opinions on working there. Be friendly and be yourself do not lie about your skills and understanding of things as they will know.
