  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I had the opportunity to do work experience at Tesco last year, they gave me a wide variety of tasks ranging from restocking the shelves, making sure that the products were in the right places, assisting managers with their laborious tasks and also assisting customers if they needed any help whatsoever.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt a mast of new skills during my work expirence, I learnt to work as a group and assist other members of my team with any help they needed and I also learnt to be independent as I was given some solo tasks as well. I learnt how to talk to customers, who were complete strangers so this really boosted my confidence. I also learnt to manage my time properly as I had to be there for specific times very day.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Tesco?
  • I felt very valued by them, they always included me in all occasions as if I was an employee and not just there temporarily for work experience. Also they constantly told me that I was good and they were proud to have me in their company. They also gave me several rewards for my hard work as an incentive to work even harder.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was very well organised, with a wide variety of tasks given to me each day. They made sure that each day was different and never let me feel like I was doing the same thing each day over and over again even though the tasks were very similar, they managed to vary them and make hem more interesting. Also they had extra work if I ever finished any early so we’re very well prepared in this regard as well.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received a lot of support from my provider, they helped me to understand how to do the tasks that I had not done before in my life and if I ever got them wrong they would kindly tell me what I was doing wrong and what to do to improve. They were always there if I ever needed support of any kind and this was great.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I did not get to talk to my employer much and they were busy in their own work and so i really only saw them in the morning when I was to report to them however at this time they told me exactly what my jobs were for the day and so were really helpful in setting the day out and telling me when my breaks were etc. This is the only really support I got from them as much of my other support was provided by the training provider.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I did not get paid for my work expieence as it was just work expieeence and was not that long. This is totally acceptable given that it gave me more of a asset to put on my future CV’s. However the staff realised that my hard work meant something so they gave me several vouchers when I finished as a thank you for my hard work and to show their appreciation. I felt this was a very moving gesture.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There weren’t many opportunities outside of work, however this is not that much of an issue as for a retail company like Tesco for them to provide opportunities outside of work related to the work I was doing there isn’t really an option as again I was working in retail. I wish there were opportunities outside of work however I understand why there wasn’t any.

  • 9. Would you recommend Tesco to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I gained a whole lot of skills that I would not have got otherwise and it gave me something good to put on my CV and other applications. Furthermore it boosted my confidence by a huge margin which has helped improve other aspects of my life. So if you get the opportunity you really should take work experience.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tesco?
  • I would say that if you have any questions, don’t be shy to ask your supervisor or employer and they will always support you no matter what and also to make the most out of the opportunities that come your way while there. You should definitely go for this opportunity as it will give you a lot of skills.
