  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an implementation technical analyst within the directory services team. We can handle a variety of tasks be it helping a user to reset their password to the setup of completely new domains and machines. We have many interactions with inside the organisation as we are expected to help users whenever they have an issue or problem relating to the authentication of their credentials to setting up GPOs to control who has access to certain systems. We also have vendors externally who we will engage with to help come up with a plan to an issue or implementation of a new product. We are expected to keep the system secure and locked down away from cyber criminals and fraudsters.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Through the time at RBS I have learnt a vast skill set that has helped me to achieve what is expected of me in my team> RBS has a culture where they will support their employees to take up new learning and skill courses to help propel them into the next level of their career. I have been on courses with Microsoft helping me with the understanding of DFS and hybrid identity as well as to looking to the future with a look at Azure and cloud computing.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love coming to work each day as the general culture RBS holds as a whole is very employee based. They want to help you to achieve at being a better you and pushes you forward giving you new opportunities to network and compete with other employees at being the best at your role. The team atmosphere is also great as there is a sense of comradery within the teams and everyone gets along with everyone> the chemistry the team has is why I love working here.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NatWest?
  • In terms of our line managers and our own teams I feel that we are given more then enough appreciation and we are treated as a equal. I feel however when it comes time to to help other teams it can feel like we are second rate. As soon as they see that we are an apprentice it feels that are opinions no longer matter. However, I have a habit of using this to drive me to show them I am there peer and motivates me to force them to see that.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel that the induction days where helpful in some regard. The first couple of days more taught us about networking and first impressions> This was okay but never really touched on how we maintain connections. The third day I feel was better as it was more focused on the department of placement and helped us gain a knowledge of the work ethic and culture within our department. When I started here there was a clear plan laid out and they had everything they wanted to teach me to do planned out and ready. They also had a document that listed and highlighted the key players within Technology.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I feel that the tutor’s availability has been spot on. They were always there to support me when I had an issue with any course work or had a clash in event scheduling with training from both RBS and QA. They always had a way of giving me the help and advice when it comes to what I could do better when something needed to improve or highlighted something I was doing well.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My line manager is always in my corner when ever I have a problem with something or someone's piece of work. He will always try to help me in the best way he can. The HR team have always been helpful. They helped me get my tax code sorted so I am paying the right tax to helping me when the monthly salary did not go into my account. There is also GPLs that give us guidance on how to handle situations if/when they arise.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • RBS pays myself more then enough to live off and handle my costs. I always have enough money to get me throughout the month as well as a little extra. There is also schemes RBS supports such as getting discounts on season tickets for buses, trams and trains as well as discounts on high street brands and big companies such as amazon, Samsung and HP. Location is easy enough to get to through the use of trams as well as buses and personal vehicle .

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • RBS has given many opportunities outside of work to network and gain contacts and work friends over the apprenticeship. We had a team challenge to produce a plan and develop a product that the bank could use to help improve customer service for RBS. Also we have an initiative for 3 days we can use to volunteer and help the general public as well as community outreach days where we will help develop land that has been left and improve both the community as well as the environment.

  • 9. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • RBS has one of the best mantras as well as cultures when it comes to their employees. They are supportive of you and will help your skill set by providing you training (on many of occasions free of charge) and knowledge to do better allowing you to flourish within the organisation> They also want to help the general public as much as they can and doing whatever it takes to become number one in trust and advocacy.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • If you are going to apply to RBS I would suggest you brush up on you knowledge of RBS and its sister franchises (such as Nat West and Ulster) and what the job role entails. Also think what do you want from this experience and apply it to the interview. Lastly, I would say be yourself. DON'T be afraid to show you personality. I had an interviewer who asked me what I was into and i told him I was into rock music and that led down a path of a 15 minuet discussion on rock music. Before we knew it the time flew past.
