  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is junior accountant and my daily tasks include reconciliations of data and interacting with key stakeholders in order to confirm any variances. I tend to not interact externally. On a daily basis I also have to closely monitor my emails in case there are any issues escalated.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I'm getting an accountancy qualification ACA out of my apprenticeship which is highly regarded in the industry. We don't have much training at work and we are expected to mainly learn on the job which can be tough in the beginning but it's not too difficult. We also have a designated member of the same team looking after our development

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy working and being part of the working community however I feel like my work is very repetitive and can get boring once you know everything and feel settled in the team. We have a good team spirit which creates a positive environment and makes it fun to work though. The culture at ASDA is consistently positive

  • 4. How valued do you feel by ASDA?
  • Judging by my rewards I don't feel like I'm particularly valued or that the work that I do is even somewhat important. My team mates really do appreciate it though and make me feel better about it. I get to get involved in interesting tasks and often get to choose what to do.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I struggle to understand the structure of the programme sometimes so i often just go with the flow and do what other apprentices are doing. We didn't have an induction which would have been useful to introduce people to key concepts. I get support from the designated person from my team looking after my personal development

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I rarely contact my training provider and I am currently unsure how to do it although I am sure it is possible to find this out. I do chat to my tutors after class if I have any issues but I don't think I ever emailed them. I am sure they'd be helpful.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a of support from my team if I have any issues, also our HR department is always quick and helpful if I'm faced with any issues, however, if it's something minor I normally go to a designated person looking after me in my team.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • the salary allows me to just about survive after paying rent in London and things like oyster card. I rarely allow myself to go out for food/buy clothes and doing luxurious things like holidays is always a struggle. I think it's unfair as my salary is so much lower than everyone else's

    1/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • We have a lovely team and we tend to organise a lot activities outside of work such as networking drinks and bowling nights. We want to volunteer with our team and we are currently in the process of orginising something to do with our local community

    10/10

  • 9. Would you recommend ASDA to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • I just feel like the salary is unreasonably low and try to find something that pays slightly more and gives you more opportunities. I guess it's an okay place to start your career especially if you never worked before and have zero experience.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to ASDA?
  • really consider if this is for you as once you start and you get sponsored for your studies it is difficult to leave as you end up owing the company money. It's an important decision otherwise entry requirements aren't too high so as long as you're not too nervous in the interview it'll be fine
