  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • IT Application Developer • Development of new application in areas such as mobile (Mobile Data Studio), web/client server, C# programming and SharePoint. • Managing projects whilst developing and testing pre-launched applications. • Creating system documentation to record development processes and technical knowledge. •Streamlining processes, developing small-scale systems and enhancing existing applications. •Managing SQL databases and performing queries to extract data with integrated Visual Studio environment. •Managing the application lifecycle from initial requirements, analysis, design, development, testing, launch and post-launch support •Providing cover for first line support when required •Attending Career Development workshops, IP events and Training courses •Project managing a range of IT and non-IT related projects

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I attended various in house and external workshops to build upon my existing skills whilst learning new, skills such as innovation, creativity, leadership. Technical skills included undergoing a 5-day course for learning how to program in C#. NET framework and SharePoint. I was also on the performance review whereby I had the chance to voice my opinion about any skills I thought I could impove.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The experience I have gained from undergoing a diverse range of projects at 3M has been remarkable. I have attained exposure in developing my technical knowledge, particularly in the field of programming, alongside further enhancing my business awareness and soft skills. I have acquired the ability to make decisions and negotiate via holding discussions with other businesses to reach a position of mutual satisfaction and agreement; leadership via project managing and peer-mentoring in addition to time managing effectively, prioritising appropriately and problem-solving efficiently

  • 4. How valued do you feel by 3M UK?
  • 3M as a company tightly revovles around values which is well showcased during my work experience year and is easily recognisable from the people and culture at 3M. I had peer mentoring on a weekly basis and one-to-one meetings with my manager to discuss how i can improve and constantly learn new things. Ihad the freedom to explore other subject areas and also learn more about the business. I was treated as an actual employee and had resonsibility from day one.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very structured with on-boarding induction events to ensure a smooth transition from education into the corporate field of work. The company itself in Bracknell is the headquarters for UK, so there is a lot of organisation and company policies in place for ensuring success. There is a 4-week training prior to starting and working on live projects.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received a lot of support from the previous work experience student, from mt team members and from my mentor and manager which all contributed towards enjoyment and a good work/life balance at 3M. There was generous supports provided from within the team and also from different areas of the department.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager was always available to lend a helpful ear or hand whenever I required extra support or clarification. Even during meetings where i was the host or leader of a team, my manager was always there to support me. He knew my personality very well including my strengths and weaknesses and managed to put me in situations at work where i could enhance my strengths whilst overcoming my weaknesses.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary was a standard £18,000 on a yearly basis. I had 25 holidays per year but also working hours was flexible. This meant that i could also work overtime to the eqivalent of 7.5 hours in total over a month to be able to get an extra day off as holiday. I was also allowed to work from home. The salary was sufficient to provide for my living costs, daily travel commuting costs and social costs.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Outisde of work, there are a lot of opportunities to get invovled in a sports team such as Cycling, Netball, Football etc. There is an onsite gym provide dby Nuffield Health. There are always voluntary options for charity events and events for team members and company members to take part in as well such as the annual christmas party as Ascot racecourse.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • 3M is a lively, large, company with plentiful opportunities and support for growth and personal improvement. The company provides many opportunities for an individual to move around whilst staying in the company as is one of the top 10 companies to work for which looks really good on your CV.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to 3M UK?
  • Apply as early as possible as screening is quite early. Be confident during the interview and on the assessment day. It is not about how technical or intelligency you are, it is more about your values and how you are as a person in addition to the extra curriculum activities you are involved with.
