  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working at NCS with the Challenge was multifactoral and thoroughly enjoyable. I was a supervisor and mentor, working with young adults in different environments to ensure that they followed through with the tasks and schedule we were set throughout the days. In week 1, this involved outdoor activities such as rock-climbing, camping and sailing. In week 2, this involved helping the elderly and setting up a dramatic performance. In week 3, it involved planning a project which was to be carried out a month later.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a multitude of new skills while working at NCS with the Challenge. First and foremost, the ability to interact with young people, and lead them without being patronising was something key I learnt. Additionally, being a mentor and supervisor honed my organisational, leadership, communication and teamwork skills. It also enabled me to learn to work confidently and successfully in a certain time frame.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme has been running for many years, and therefore was very well structured. We were inducted and received training over the span of two weeks, being supported by multiple different people along the process. Any difficulties we had were immediately addressed, both before starting the programme, and during the programme. Additionally, we were asked to provide feedback on our training to ensure that any faults we saw were amended for the next batch of trainees.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?

As aforementioned, there were multiple different people training us along the way, all of whom were constantly open to queries, and aiding us with any difficulties we faced before, and during the programme. Everyone had a positive attitude, and never failed to give us the attention we needed.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The employer did not provide as much support as the training staff provided. Although the employers were involved in our induction, briefly introducing us to the programme, and telling us the different aspects of things we'd be doing; the rest of the information and training, as well as support, was given to us by training staff at NCS with the Challenge.
