Intern Review

I was in charge of transferring files onto the new program implemented the week before I started. Also I prepared various customer documents and was in charge of monitoring the signing of documents from banks, credit unions and other institutions.

I learnt how to use a new digital program for the storing and managing of legal documents. I also improved on my organisational and people skills.

Although it was slightly overwhelming I enjoyed it very much. It definitely helped me see into the day to day workings of a lawyers chambers.

I feel like my help and contribution was really appreciated. Especially since this experience was supposed to be more like an internship where we are not paid I was still given a stipend for my efforts.

It's not a particularly organised programme. It is simply offered by the lawyers chambers to allow individuals from the community to have an overview and an insight into the workings of a lawyers firm. There is no stringent application process, simply an interview.

I was mostly helped by an employee who was assigned to me. I was helped a lot with client documents and typing up and editing thelse documents. However for using the programme i had to use it mostly independently.

My employer simply gave me briefings once or twice a week and allowed me to use her books. However she was very open to questions if I had any or offered support if I really needed it.

I was simply given a stipend for my efforts since once again it was a program offered by a single lawyers chambers. However it payed my transportation costs as well as meals for my time there. It was greatly appreciated.

Having experience in a law firm helps greatly with opportunities not just in the legal career but also business, finance, management and consultancy. Law is a area which opens up doors at all locations. However hard work is obviously needed since these are competitive areas.

Many students want to be lawyers. They go to laws chook and expect practicing will be somewhat like the degree obtaining process. Law is a subject that is vastly different from your degree since you only learn hard theory with no placement or other courses telling you about actual practice. Therefore I think that it's important to have experience in these areas to make sure that this is precisely what you want to do. A law degree isn't cheap. It also helps in networking as I was able to meet a few estables he'd lawyers. And any law student knows networking is so so important in starting your degree.

Make sure you want it. It's like they can sense who is really genuine and who isn't. Have reasons as to why you want to do law and why. What interests you about it? What do you think makes it differ from for example politics or government studies or even math. A career in law is very competitive and being able to have this opportunity will really help in your prospects.
