  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Auditor Associate Daily tasks include auditing different types of companies such as hotels, construction, property etc. A lot of it is testing their controls and how accurate their financial statements are. As I am a junior I mainly assist seniors and help them complete the audit pack. Internally I speak to my team and managers mainly and sometimes have contact with others in the firm. Externally I mainly speak to the client face to face or over email. Responsibility wise is mainly getting the work completed to a good standard so I can move on to the next task.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • We are currently on route to complete the certificate level of the ACA and we will eventually qualify with the ACA qualification. We have had a number of internal training courses such as Excel, TDP and many others which develop our experiences. Personal and professional skills have developed a lot as I have a understanding of how a professional work scene works where before I didn't have much of a clue coming straight from school. Knowing how to speak to clients is probably the most important skill. I can say I have learnt a lot as audit teaches you a wide range of skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy work a lot. I can honestly say I wake up every morning and look forward to go to work and I know not a lot of people can say that. I enjoy the people at work as I get on with a lot of people and were quite a tight bunch. I didn't really know what to expect as I was only 18 when I started.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BDO?
  • appreciation goes a long way as its the small things in life what matter. We get job appraisals so our job seniors get the chance to praise us if we have done well on a job. External recognition also goes a very long way however in this profession you are lucky if you get recognised by the client however most of the time you know if they like you or not. We are always involved in our desk meetings and have the chance to say where can be improved.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Its well organised as they have to organise a lot because so many of join at once so they are under a lot of pressure to make sure everything goes smoothly. Everything is set out on a plan and we know exactly when we have training, college or exams. They keep us well informed if there is any changes.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We receive a lot of support from our training provider which is first intuition based of Tottenham court road. The tutors are really friendly and helpful there and I feel like I learn a lot when I attend. Everyone has good things to say about them. they are always there to answer questions if we are stuck which is always good especially when exams are close and the nerves start to develop. The website could be better.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Moore Stephens is really understanding when it comes to exams and learning as they fund the whole thing and also let you use annual leave or toil to revise if needed. They are always there to organise online webinars to help us or to arrange us with other colleagues to give us hand with exams they have already done.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is good for my age as I was only 18 when I started. Its a big help that I live at home because I reckon I couldn't do it if lived on my own and had to pay the London prices just to live. Travel is ok but is still expensive when you get paid just to pay for your travel so it is annoying but unfortunately it has to be done. If you ever have to travel further for work and its more expensive Moore stephens would always cover the costs which is a good thing.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The opportunities outside or work mainly include socialising with our trading desk or the team which is always fun as there are plenty of things to do in London such as Go Karting, Theatre, Football and loads of bards. They also arrange Summer Party and a Christmas party which is very good especially to meet and talk to people you may not get the chance to in work.

  • 9. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would and I have recommended Moore Stephens to work as I think it is great place to work especially to do something like I am doing as a school leaver as you save money not going to University and you also save a lot of time so it is a win win. I also believe you are well looked after here and it’s a great chance to get some real experience.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
  • Take your time with the application process as it is an important procedure and also be well prepared for phone calls and assessment days as you want to stand out. However I think most importantly above all of this is to be yourself because if you are not they will know, and yourself is just fine as everyone is unique in their own way. Ask questions and show interest. Be confident but not to confident as that is never a good thing.
