  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job role is Engineering Maintenance Technician. As of this year I've been full time at college so I haven't been able to experience working at the plant. At college I do BTEC and trailblazer (PEO). On a day to day basis I do PEO subjects and have BTEC lessons Thursday and Friday afternoon.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Bedore starting the apprenticeshi i went to an engineering academy for 2 years. So i had a basic understadning of the theory side and the practical side of engineering. However since doing the apprenticeship i've definitely noticed that im much more knowledgable and my initial skills have definitely developed and become more advnaced. A lot of the work in the BTEC subjects was very new to me but i picked it up relatively fast due to good teaching. At the beginning of the year i wasnt very confident when it came to my practical work in the workshop (PEO), however as of now, i feel that my confidence has imporved as well as my skill set.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy doing the work i do because it challenges me on a daily basis. I enjoy this because it always keeps me on the ball and improves my problem solving skills. I enjoy working with the people im with as ive formed good working relationshops with all of my colleagues, which makes college a nice environment to be in. From the small amount of times ive been to the plant, ive always noticed how friendly all the employees are. I believe this is to do with the companys ethos. It is a very good company to work for as there is always a friendly feel to the place when im there. I will admit, the work is much harder than i was expecting it to be, but with good support it can be easily done.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BMW Group?
  • I feel lucky to be an employee at BMW, because it is a massive company and many people wouldve applied to the job i was chosen for, and i feel grateful i was chosen. My manager is also very kind and easy to talk to which makes the experiance a lot easier. If ever any of us apprentices have any issues that we tell out manager, they will always get sorted which makes the experiance a lot easier. if ever any of us apprentices have any issues that we tell our manager they will always get sorted which shows that they care for us.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Obviously the programme im doing is being run by the college as im here full time. I dont believe it is as organisd or as structured as it should be. This is due to many reasons. the first being that we are doing trailblazer (PEO). As it hasnt been done by the college before it feels like the staff dont know as much as they should, and its not very reassuring. Additionally, at the beginning of the year we had a lot of trouble finding a teacher, and we had a string of terrible teachers that had no clue what they were teaching. This set us back on 3 subjects and now as it gets near the end of the year thats a lot of pressure from those 3 subjects to get all the assignments aswe're behind on topics. These are problems with the college not the company.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Most of the college staff are very supportive and when asked for help will always provide it the best that they can to help us improve our knowledge and understanding. We are lucky also that we have a very good tutor who always listens to our problems and solves them.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We recieve a lot of support from our manager as shes always there to listen to any problems we have and is always ready to solve them. If ever a problem needs solving, she sees to it and will always get it done for us as soon as possible. Shes easily able to get hold off as we all have her email and number and she'll always reply asap.We dont have a mentor as we are still at college full time.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Personally i think that the salary is incredible, especially for me because i am 16 and getting this amount of money at this age is great. As i dont have to pay bills, or petrol or a car, the amount of money is brilliant. However, towards the end of this year when i get a car and start paying for petrol and pay for the car scheme each month, my opinion may change.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • As ive said before, im at college full time, so there arent many opportunities for us as the company would rather not take us out of valuable college time. However i have been on a day trip to my old school for a careers fair to promote the company. Hopefully next year i will be able to get involved with more acitvitiea and explore more opportunities, this is because i really do love getting involved with careers fair and promoting the company im blessed to be working for.

  • 9. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend working for BMW because it has really help me to develop my skills and knowledge. Also the company is so good to work for because at the factory there really is a friendly and supportive feel to the place. It also has very good work benefits such as the amazing pay and the car scheme.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • I would recommend that people do work experiance before applying so its something that looks good on their CV. It also shows that they have a passion and an understanding. Also i would recommend for their interview that they are calm, relaxed and confident. Confidence really does show through in an interview. ALso show that you have a passion for the company or for engineering in general. If you know what your talking about and your confident and passionate - it can really show through and make you stand out.
