  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work as a Research and Development apprentice within Unilever's Ice Cream Category. My work varies everyday, but is oriented around the development of new and novel ingredients within ice cream. This involves a large amount of responsibility within each different project, and allows me to work both independently and as part of a wider team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Over the course of my apprenticeship I am studying towards a BSc in Chemistry. Unilever also provides excellent internal training courses, as well as a supportive work environment in which to work and learn in. I have learnt loads of new skills, and continue to develop these across the course of my apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship as a whole. My team are very supportive and willing to help when you require it. In terms of workload it varies a little too much, however when you are actually busy the job is worthwhile and sokmetimes rewarding. Originally, the job didnt meet my expectations, however after a few months of settling in to it your expectations change and you develop a better appreciation of the job.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Unilever?
  • I feel valued in terms of my line manager, and direct team. Depending on the project the teams can change which mostly works well. In termso of recognition both within and outside the company, there is very little which is not as encouraging as Unilever portrays itself to be.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • To begin with, my overall programme was not structured at all, with a bit of time this was changed by my line manager, allowing me to start developing my knowledge across projects and workstreams. Unilever provides loads of initial training and a fair amount of support to their employees although there is no specific training for apprentices currently. I am always able to find support within my team and the wider area.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive lots of support from my university lecturers, which is easily accessible via email, online or phone. They are always there to support you and provide guidance with any problems or issues. I thoroughly enjoy studying for my degree and look forward to the day each week.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my line managers and overall director. The HR team are available if and when needed for anything. Unilever provides a mentor who is generally well versed in your subject area and can provide guidance with any problems or other general issues.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary package meets all of my living costs, and Unilever pays for it's apprentices to travel to and from their university as well as funding the degree itself. The location of the job means that you really need your own transport, which adds to the living expenses. Living away from home and parents is more expensive, and gives you less money overall compared to other apprentices.

    7/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are lots of opportunities within the community both at work and outside of work in the local community. The apprentices onsite have formed a network and regularly go out socialising together. Onsite there is access to a gym and several sports clubs. The location of the site is beautiful and allows for lots of country walks.

  • 9. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Unilever overall is a great company to work for, with a great reputation within a fast paced industry. They treat their employees well and offer help and support if and when you require it.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • The application process is relatively straight forward, just be prepared and you will do great! The interviews are more informal than one would expect which just shows how relaxed the working environment is at unilever. There is lots to experience within the company, with lots of opportunities ahead.
