  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I was a personal shopper at Debenhams and I loved it, my tasks were to provide one to one interactions with customers and help them find the best clothes that suited them. My responsibilities were quite high as I knew that I was representing the company and their ethos in fashion choices! This was what I did daily and it was enjoyable for me.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've developed on my social skills an incredible amount, i'm so confident with speaking to people now which is amazing! Qualifications for me were not required as I did this on my year out, but I was trained internally to know certain rules and regulations off by heart, this has also helped me improve on my memory recalling skills as there was a lot to learn and apply.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed it immensely, the work varied daily per customer and my colleagues were extremely friendly. Debenhams definitely takes pride in showing off the best and so it was a pleasant surprise for me to be welcomed like this. It exceeded my expectations and I would love to do this again if not for other commitments.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Debenhams?
  • Very valued, my manager was extremely helpful and offered me support where needed, especially at the beginning where I was getting accustomed to the store and the layout of it. I was not involved in projects as I was only here for a year but my job never really required collaborative work.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very organised, I had an induction day that got me familiar with the store and the training did not take too long. If I had any issues then I would consult my manager which was nice, I was actually sort of independent in my field and would only have to report my work to my manager occasionally, so there was definitely an element of trust.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Whenever I needed help then I could call my mentor, she was great and I used her a lot in the first instances of the job as I familiarised myself with the store and the staff. I had no problems and if I did then I could ask for help knowing I would receive it, which is a blessing as not all providers are as co-operative.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A great deal, my manager was the best manager i've ever had, so helpful and always kept me updated, offered me tips and even gave me some free goodies! The guidance I had received in order to make sure that I was doing a good job really pleased me and I think it shows as I really enjoyed the job and the customers enjoyed my presence.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Very well, I walked to the store everyday as it was a 35 minute walk, so it wasn't overly long and helped to keep me fit. The money I received satisfied my needs and I saved a lot of it for the most part, so I did not have to spend anything on travel costs. Location was perfect for me so it may depend on where you're applying too for the job.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many company fashion events and we have access to new fashion magazines which is cool and helps to keep us updated on the latest trends - Especially me as I try to help others shop for the right clothes. We got discounts for all debenhams items and I saved a lot of money from this job, but I made sure to buy some stuff of my own before I left!

  • 9. Would you recommend Debenhams to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • If you're looking for varied work that is not monotonous daily, this is the job for you! This will practise on your social skills a ton as you are required to talk to shoppers of all ages which really broadens your language and body language use, it's well paid too and the hours are fair for what you do.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Debenhams?
  • Show your enthusiasm at the interview, as they require an application and then an interview if successful. Show what you want to do and why you have applied for this job, happiness is what they want and they want that emotion conveyed onto customers! If you don't feel like you can contribute positively all the time then you may need to re-think applying here, as it can be hard to maintain a happy face all the time I must admit, but when it is busy then you are always on your feet so it depends.
