  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Engineering Technician in my first year. In the first year I have been based in the workshop learning Electrical, Mechanical, hand fitting and machining skills. From August I will begin placements relating to my target department whilst studying for my degree.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how electrical and pneumatics circuits are designed, constructed and operated which are things that I had never completed before. Whilst completing the workshop tasks I have also been studying a BTEC level 3 sub diploma to gain the required knowledge before beginning the degree course.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy this course and feel that I have learnt a number of new skills. The company is really good to work for and very supportive of apprenticeships. I am looking forward to starting placements throughout the business from September.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BMW Group?
  • BMW have quarterly reviews with every apprentice to ensure they are progressing to their individual required target. Good feedback is given on tasks completed and lots of tasks are provided where you are left to use your own initiative to successfully complete the task.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organised with an initial induction followed by a weeklong team building trip to Devon which allows you to get to know the people you will be studying with over the next four years. At times you can be assigned multiple assignments at the same time which can be difficult to manage the workload but it is achievable.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Tutor support is good generally and extra sessions are provided for support with BTEC work if it is needed. It is easy to see your progress due to a tracker where all assignments are collated.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • BMW supports it apprentices highly and are always happy to try and resolve any issue no matter how small or large. Feedback from apprentices is treated with a high regard and acted on quickly. Ideas for improvements are welcomed.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Our salary is very good and is reviewed every 6 months based upon individual performance. My travel costs are quite high as I drive 80 miles each day but these are easily covered. Apprentices are entitled to the company car scheme and other BMW group benefits.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The company run a couple of events each year such as their team based mountain challenge. There are a number of local sports clubs nearby to the plant. The company also entered apprentices into a 5 a side football tournament.

  • 9. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The overall package of the job is extremely good and you always feel valued. You are given responsibility for tasks and made to take ownership. Individual skills are improved through assigning team leaders each week. You always go home feeling that you have learnt something.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • The application process is quite long but easy to complete. Interview days are well structured and the people running the day make you feel very relaxed to ensure they get the best out of you. My advice would be to go well prepared and ensure you have something created that ensures you stand out.
