  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is an assistant relationship manager, my daily tasks consist of aiding the relationship manager with general customer enquiries, making service calls, booking meetings etc. On a daily basis I will speak to numerous internal teams such as our Services team, our credit stewardship teams and most importantly the RM. I also have contact with customers on a daily basis. I have responsibility for things such as payment referrals and approving them up to a certain amount, kick starting account opening, ordering debit cards, processing various forms, making sure the RM has meetings booked for their renewals. I am currently a service champion meaning I am involved in projects to do with service. Every day I am checking my inbox to see what tasks I have to do.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My apprenticeship has allowed me to achieve the Professional bankers certificate and a level 3 in providing financial services. I do the quarterly online training courses I am required to do as a bank employee. I have done CPR courses with the workplace in mind for emergency purposes. Personally, my customer service skills have developed vastly along with my organisational and time keeping skills. I have learnt how to undertake service calls, my literacy has improved due to the professional manner in which I have to write emails and communicate with customers

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NatWest?
  • My manager always acknowledges when I go beyond my job requirements. I feel like a valued member of the team. I am familiar with teams that do not work in my office as I make a conscious effort to communicate with them to maintain good relationships and I feel this is recognised by them. In terms of customers I have built good relationships were many of the customers I interact with come to me first and trust me. I have an active part in projects if I want to and there is no pressure to do something I don't want to. I felt very valued

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The induction was well structured and gave us a good idea of what the programme (learning aspect) would be like. I was in regular contact with my mentor and the other apprentices within my region. My mentor gave me training as and when required. I was allowed plenty of time to study and my line manager was very understanding and supportive of this. I didn't have a specific alignment to an RM during my apprenticeship but RMs/ARMs were very good in delegating tasks and projects to me, I never felt short of work. The team I work within was structured well and the hierarchy was clear from the outset. At times the programme had its flaws but in general it was well organised

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My tutor made it clear that should I never need her help/just want to talk she was available via email and phone. she was always on hand when I did need her help and never left an email unreplied or a missed call ignored. I didn't experience many problems but I did have to go off sick for a serious operation and she was very helpful with getting a learning break put in place. She always sounded like she wanted to help so I felt comfortable in contacting her. I enjoyed the training aspect of my apprenticeship.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager is very supportive, I know if I ever have any problems I can go to them and I feel comfortable in doing so. The HR team always seem to be on the ball and like to make employees aware they are there to help, however I have never had any direct dealings with them. As I've said before, my mentor is very helpful and always willing to support. We are regularly reminded of all the help available to us should we have any problems so if i was to experience any issues I would immediately know who to turn to. The general attitude towards supporting me from my employer is great

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Outside of work we have constant opportunities, often invited to networking events. RBS offers many voluntary initiatives such as charity work/speaking to schools. We are often made aware of opportunities in our area such as seminars and presentations and events. Due to my hours I have the opportunity to take part in fitness outside of work which meant I would often go to the gym after work

  • 9. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a good company to work for. They make it clear how much they value their employees. They do this by demonstrating it in pay/holidays/the way you are treated on a daily basis. No matter who you are you feel a valued employee. They also present many opportunities to you such as charity work, giving initiatives such as extra days off to perform charity work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • Please be patient with the application process as it is quite lengthy. Be as honest as you can an demonstrate your willingness to learn and progress from the outset. If you get to an interview stage please do not be nervous as there is nothing to worry about, be professional and be yourself. Take every opportunity you can as they will all better you and better your career. this is all the things I would have liked to be told, and also don't be afraid to speak up
