  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am doing an Business Admin Apprenticeship. I work for the Head of Equalities for Children's Services in the County Council and it is incredibly varied! I can organise and run events one day, to sorting out international meetings and travelling on another! I also sort out quotes, prepare training to be delivered, research things, plan and minute meetings, all the regular administration stuff!

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have gained so much confidence in general. I now am happy to plan an event with 2 people to 200 people. I can chase people up who aren't replying. I have been on a mental health first aid course. My manager is going to train me to be a trainer. I can't say enough!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I LOVE it. The work I do is mostly interesting and I feel like it has a purpose. The ladies in my office are excellent we have a laugh, but I know they are always there to help too. It has completely exceeded my expectations - the ethos here is work hard, and enjoy the rewards.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by SEAC?
  • My manager definitely values me, and I am fully involved in the work she does. I am often passed on compliments sent to her by colleagues and I feel my hard work is definitely recognised. I have never worked in such a positive environment where people have high expectations of me and really appreciate what I do.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The nature of my job means it cannot always have a routine. I make a regular slot for NVQ work and always set a time to meet with my tutor in advance. Everyone is clear on what our roles are and the support from my account manager at SEAC is superb. There is a clear team and clear support system.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My tutor is very supportive, she makes sure any times we meet suit us both, and that I can contact her if I need to. She is always very clear on what I need to do and keeps me updated on where I am at and what I am doing well and what I can improve on. Couldn't ask for more. She is keen to understand me and how I work best.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer (SEAC) are very supportive, I have regular meetings with my account manager to find solutions to any problems or just to have a catch up on how I am. She is very active in working with my host company. The host company are also incredible! There is a specific apprentice support lead and there is also a social group for all the apprentices.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • It would be nicer to be on more money, I'm 21 and I think this is the least I've ever earned. I don't have any hope of moving out of my parents house for a long time which is frustrating. I always think - I've got to speculate to accumulate!

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • YES! So far I have joined an LGBT forum, and after a conference I networked and am now a peer support tutor at the recovery college (part of the mental health service). Apart from those I am already a part of a choir, I go to the gym, and I am part of a support group.

  • 9. Would you recommend SEAC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • This apprenticeship has already given me so much. I didn't consider an apprenticeship until I saw the role and found out more about my manager. I have learnt so much, managed to travel, networked, had access to so many things I wouldn't otherwise. Also everyone is really willing for me to learn and help me out, which sometimes is not the case when you just work for someone - you are expected to do your specific role and know how to do it.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SEAC?
  • You get out of your apprenticeship what you put in, make sure it's in an area you are really going to love. Make sure to take up any opportunity available! Don't be afraid to ask questions. Sell yourself and the fact you are excited to learn in the application/interview process. Research!
