I did a business administration apprenticeship as soon as i left school in 1999. I thoroughly enjoyed the studying, and i was working in a college IT resources centre.
I learnt lots of new skills, dealing with the public, dealing with students & staff, working on the computers, operating a till and dealing with cash.
I really enjoyed doing an apprenticeship. Going to college full time wasn't something that i wanted to do. I loved gaining the experience of working full time, as well as being able to further my education
I was kept on by my employer at the end, that helped me to feel valued. I was also treated like a member of staff, and not just the trainee.
It was a bit flexible. I did finish my course a bit before i should have done and then i was given a full time contract.
Lots of support. I was lucky in that i had a work placement in the same place as i did the study, so the teachers weren't just teachers, they were also work colleagues.
Lots of support. I was lucky in that i had a work placement in the same place as i did the study, so the employers understood what was required and allowed me the time to study.
As an apprentice, it was ok at the time as i was living at home with my parents, and i got a lift to and from work, and so the amount that i was earning was plenty. However if i'd have been an adult doing the apprentice, i would have struggled because the cost of living would have been so much higher.
Not that i can thing of
Yes
I think it's a great way to gain the much wanted experience that employers want as well as getting some training as you're going along. I would definately recommend an apprenticeship to people, and i will be encouraging my children to go down that route when they are older.
