  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role was as a Front of House Team member. Starting out to learn how to properly re lay tables first and the basic elements to the job. Then moving on to helping other Front of house team members, to be able to shadow them to be able to gain the skills to move on to waitressing and other general duties within the role.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt that organisation is very important within a restaurant. With our organisation and time management your role would be quite a bit harder. So this work experience helped me to develop those skills from school to be able to effectively perform the job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoyed my work experience with Mitchell's and Butler's. Getting me out of my comfort zone to help prepare me if I chose to go straight into work after Secondary school.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Mitchells & Butlers?
  • I felt very valued because I was always praised when I was improving. Even though you can't always be perfect, I was still praised when I tried and attempted to do a task.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It felt organised. Starting out with the basics, and then progressively moving into the other elements of the job role and learning more about the background of the business.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • As my employer was my training provider, provided by the team leaders and manager due to being work experience, I could always talk to them if I needed any help at all. Which made me feel very supported knowing they were there if I needed any support during the day.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I was always encouraged to ask questions when I didn't understand or needed help. This made me feel supported and relaxed with my work experience, knowing that if I needed help I could just ask for it.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As it was voluntary work experience I was not paid for the position. I was told the salary based on hours of work if I was to work with Mitchells and Butlers.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • With the skills I gained from this work experience it pushed me to want to join more clubs at school in year 11. Helping with my confidence to be able to do more at school.

  • 9. Would you recommend Mitchells & Butlers to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Because I felt so supported during the work experience. If something went wrong I could talk to someone, and I wasn't pressured to be perfect. Only to do the best I can.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mitchells & Butlers?
  • As they have both Front of house and Back of house work experience offers you have the choice of what you would prefer to learn. Weighing up the options of what you would rather do if you left school before applying is a good idea as they are very different roles.
