  • I was a kennel and cattery assistant which involves cleaning the animals accommodation, daily animal care, feeding, loading with members of the public and completing the required paperwork.

  • Whilst working I developed my communication skills through liasing with members of the public and other staff members and I was able to learn clinical and handling skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme was extremely enjoyable as it allowed me to develop and learn skills as well to improve my confidence within the profession.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by RSPCA?
  • Staff members treated me as an equal wherever possible and made me feel like an essential part of the work team.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was reasonably well structured on a day to day basis however the long term organisation wasn't brilliant as I was only told what I would be working on when I arrived.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I felt I learnt a lot due to the level of support I was provided as I meant I could easily balance all aspects of the work.

  • I was always supervised and supported throughout my placement and felt well looked after during the whole experience.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I was unpaid whilst on work experience but payment wasn't something I required and I felt I received enough benefit through learning vital skills.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Due to there being an age gap between myself and most of the employees there weren't many opportunities to work off site or socialise outside of work.

  • Yes

  • I would recommend it as there is a large scope to earn vital skills and improve others as well as progressing towards a career


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSPCA?
  • I would advise them to put a lot of hard work and effort into it in order to gain more from the placement. I would also advise them to ensure they had a love of animals and a desire to learn about their welfare and the implications their care can have on their welfare.
