  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I would follow staff and help stack shelves. I looked at how to take stock and support customers. I was given the task of pulling cages out after training and stocking shelves. This was interesting.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I had training in health and safety, including food safety, and interpersonal skills. This was through their own video training made by Tesco. This was useful. I learnt how to talk to customers professionally.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed it to some extent, the work was OK and the team were friendly and supportive. The company culture supported young people especially. It did not meet my expectations as I expected more responsibility.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Tesco?
  • I felt somewhat valued. The manager showed his appreciation but general staff did not. There are awards internally for excellent staff which act as good incentives. I had some involvement in tasks.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was well organised and structured with clear tasks every day. It started with training before going onto shop floor. I had meetings with my support mentor who checked I was ok.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received lots of support. Guidance with problems was good, and they wanted to help and had a good attitude. I overall enjoyed the experience and felt this was due to the support I had.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The management team were good and supported me. The HR team were also very good. They had a good attitude towards supporting me and the options I had available in working there.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As work experience it was unpaid but the salary is national wage. Unless you are a manager which is salaried and is a good amount. The lunch was provided which was an excellent bonus.

    6/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are lots of company events including going to Cardiff to set up a new store, and going to head office. They have lots of activities and incentives. They work closely with the local community.

    9/10

  • 9. Would you recommend Tesco to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • I did not find the work interesting in a way in which I would recommend to a friend. It seemed as though young people were fast tracked to management and many other employees do not respect that.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tesco?
  • The application and interview was easy as was the induction. I was not given a uniform for some time which was a shame. I would like to have been told some more information on how to work the tills.
