  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Scientific Technician: The role largely involved repairing and maintaining scientific equipment which was extremely interesting. The role also involved some preparation and disposal of lab materials such as corrosive acids.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt how to fix bunsen burners as well as lab glassware. I also learnt some basic use of mass spectrometry machines as well as how to maintain such machines, and other equipment such as fume boxes, centrifuged and

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Although quite short, my programme was very enjoyable as I worked with a variety of people from different age groups and with very different specialisms. Overall the programme taught me a lot about what goes on in scientific laboratories but also a significant amount of real world knowledge on what its like to have a job in a technically challenging profession.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Bramhall High School?
  • I felt quite valued as a member of staff, I was instrumental in helping to streamline and increase the efficiency of the IT systems due to my prior IT knowledge. I was also a valued member of the repair and maintenance team, improving response times by 20%.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was fairly well structured with mentors required to keep a brief weekly log of my activities while I was required to keep a more detailed log of my daily activities. Upon finishing my programme I will be required to deliver a presentation to aspiring programme applicants.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My training provider was my mentor at my place of work experience and initially provided me with any support required however as I progressed less support was needed and was therefore not received.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The majority of support was with keeping the log and the contents of the presentation, as this was what they were largely concerned with.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Generally my costs have not changed and I continue to have a very comfortable salary to live on as well as healthcare benefits provided as part of the package. The latter of which was immensely helpful.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are some slightly more social activities run however these were infrequent and of little interest. No further opportunities were made aware to me initially however I later discovered there are a number of sports teams, these are also of little interest.

  • 9. Would you recommend Bramhall High School to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Very good opportunity to learn a lot of advanced and niche skills that are highly valued in many industries. The programme was very stimulating and challenging as well as looking great on a CV.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bramhall High School?
  • A certain degree of prior knowledge is expected, as with most programmes of this nature however interviewers are more interested in how motivated and enthusiastic you are for both the field and the work.
