  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • A teaching assistant at a primary school. I spent a week in each class, experiencing different ages in a school setting. I helped children with their daily reading, one to one work, and classroom activities. As well as cleaning and tidying the classroom, and helping with the key stage 1 sports day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Confidence was increased as I was ableto experience leading a classroom of children. Also my leadership skills and organisation skills were increased.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed it a lot as I have always wanted to experience working with children. However, I found it more difficult to work with the older children, year 6, as I found it a lot more daunting.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Dorset Council?
  • I was highly excepted by the staff members and enjoyed break and lunch time conversations in the staff room. Everyone seemed to work together well.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well structured, as it was a school system so I just followed the normal structure of the school day, apart from when we had sports day therefore that was separately organised.

  • I received a lot of support from the teachers in the class that I was working in each week, as well as support from the headmistress.

  • I received a lot of support from the teachers in the class that I was working in each week, as well as support from the headmistress. This support confirmed that I was okay during my time at the school.

  • I was not paid during my time at the school, as this role was voluntary.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes, there are as I can look at both primary and secondary school as well as nurserys. Experience with all ages allows for the running of after school clubs, as well as one to one tutoring sessions.

  • Yes

  • It was a brilliant experience that allowed for me to experience a lot of different opportunities as well as helped to improve my cv and skills.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dorset Council?
  • I would tell them to throw themselves into the opportunity as the placement involves a lot of work but it assists you in gaining experience but also increasing your work skills.
