Working as a teaching assistant in a school in the USA, I worked in the classrooms, prepared and taught lessons, helped teachers etc.
I learnt so much about different methods of teaching, especially being able to develop my confidence as I delivered lessons to a whole class of children. The staff were always on hand to give me advice and support to help me develop my teaching skills.
I really enjoyed my work experience, both because it has given me new skills and confidence, and also because it was a fun experience and I got to meet loads of new friends! I still keep in touch with some of the other staff who worked at the school. It gave me the opportunity to try new things.
I felt very valued. All the staff were friendly and willing to help me. I got excellent feedback and advice to help me develop further and I got a warm goodbye when I finished my work experience.
I had set hours each day (the school opening hours) and at the start I was given a timetable for which lessons I would be working in. However as the work experience placement went on, I was able to change my timetable to suit the activities I was finding most beneficial and enjoyable. This made the programme structured but still flexible to my needs.
I received a lot of support throughout the process. The other staff went above and beyond to help me find materials, plan my lessons and give me advice on how things could be done. It was even arranged that I would have an observation from the head teacher who then gave me helpful feedback on how I could improve.
My employer/training provider would be the same person. I received lots of support from everyone at the school to help me gain the most from my work experience.
This was an unpaid work experience/voluntary placement, but I was able to walk to the placement each day so there were no costs involved.
This experience has greatly added to my CV and has actually helped me gain a job as a teaching assistant at a school in the U.K. It has massively enhanced my opportunities and has given me a great depth of knowledge into the job.
Yes
It was both a fun and useful experience; as well as giving me new skills and developing my existing skills, it has enhanced my CV and helped me to get a job further down the line. I had a great experience!
Send a CV and a formal letter/email explaining your situation, why you would like a placement there, what you want to do in the future and why you think you would do a good job.
