  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • This work experience involved shadowing a urologist at heartlands hospital, Birmingham. I witnessed out patient clinics as well as theatre for urological day cases.

  • This gave me an understanding of the main urological problems faced by the elderly. I learnt more about working as a team and problem solving to reach a diagnosis.

  • This programme was very well organised with a range of different activities to experience. This breadth made it enjoyable.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Heart of England NHS Foundations Trust?
  • All of the healthcare workers I came across in this placement were helpful to enable me to have a productive placement at the hospital.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programmes was well organised with a timetable of the procedures I was expected to see during the week. It had schedules for outpatients clinics,theatres, ward rounds and MDT meetings.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The training provider funded my lunch during the placement. There was support in terms of making sure I was getting the right experience.

  • My employer was able to support me in terms of securing thus placement as it can be very competitive.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My only costs were the travel expenses which were not covered. However, lunch was provided and this cut the cost.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Hours outside the scheduled day were encouraged to see a variety of different procedures in the hospital. I manage to visit the orthopaedic theatre and was also taught how to conduct an Ecg on the ward.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • This work experience placement taught me a lot about the pros and cons of following a medical career. It was realistic in terms of a typical working day and I have based this placement of deciding what subject to study at university.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Heart of England NHS Foundations Trust?
  • Apply early as places for work experience in hospitals are very competitive. It helps knowing a doctor within the work place that you can directly submit your application to. Make the most of your placement by seeing procedures outside of your timetable that interest you.
