  • My role is to learn all the skills and knowledge required of an OHL craftsperson. This involves carrying out work at height or at ground level to maintain the power transmission system nationwide

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned how to use a variety of new tools that I didn't even know existed and I have been give certificates and licenses for aspect of the job that normally I would have paid a fortune for. I particularly enjoyed learning how to operate the MEWPs and vehicles associated with my line of work

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • As I am constantly learning skills and progressing towards a rewarding career for life I am thoroughly enjoying the chance to learn all that I can

  • 4. How valued do you feel by National Grid?
  • Considering the attention to detail that each person receives I feel, for a company this size that National Gid value their staff just as highly as they do their customers and will do anything to make sure the wellbeing and welfare of its staff are of a high standard

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • So far the apprenticeship is running smoothly and there have been no issues regarding organization at all so far

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have been able to see my trainer for a number of private reasons and professional reasons and in all situations i have received exactly the help I was after and am extremely grateful for all the help I receive

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • With all the programmes and structured processes in place I feel that the support given by the company is amazing and alot better than what I have gotten used to from previous employers

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I receive ample money to be able to afford my bills and mortgage payments ad still have a fulfilling social life alongside work. When considering this is an apprenticeship I would say the salary I receive is substantial

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The skills I am learning at work are definitely helping with skills that can be easily applied outside of work and are easily transferrable. As such I feel I am learning skills that are enriching my life yet to come

  • 9. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I have recommended national grid. This is because the benefits and opportunities of the job and career path would make for a very comfortable standard of living and its not a boring job at all, no matter which sector you work in, against previous experience I would say that national grid is THE best job I've ever had


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • I would say that putting everything you have into the learning process and committing to the work required will benefit you in the long run. There's a lot to learn so the more effort you put in the more rewarding you will find the whole experience
