  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In my technical apprenticeship I move placements every 3 months to get a try at different areas of the business. I work with different managers and supervisors because of this, and attend different team meetings to get an idea of the projects. I sometimes shadow people working to get a good idea of what to do, and then work on different pieces of work independently.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am completing a BTEC level 3 extended diploma in general engineering, alongside an NVQ level 3 in engineering technical support. I've also learnt a lot of on-the-job specific skills which will be very useful in future. My soft skills have been developed within the business as well.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Everyone whom I have worked with have been very helpful and approachable, and it is a very pleasant environment to work in. I have gained a lot of skills which are extremely useful, and complete a variety of interesting work. Sometimes work is a bit light for the apprentices but can normally be boosted with NVQ work.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Leonardo?
  • I feel very valued as an apprentice at Leonardo. We get lots of interaction with various managers who are always interested in improving the scheme and assisting with NVQ work. There is also a good recognition scheme set up, sometimes with shopping vouchers awarded for outstanding work.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • We have very regular reviews in which our placement managers will give feedback on our work. There is a placement plan to work from so you know which placement you will be in next which is quite accurate. We also attend college once a week to study for our BTEC.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The college tutors are quite supportive, lessons are sometimes a bit disorganised and can occasionally be confusing. There is normally a lot of support if you're struggling with assignments.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The apprentice manager is very supportive and approachable if there are any issues which need advice. Almost anyone within the business can be approached with issues where appropriate and will try to help, everyone is very friendly and helpful.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I am still living at home, but my salary allows me to pay a small amount of rent to my parents, along with my phone contract and other smaller monthly commitments. I have been able to purchase a car and have enough money for fuel and insurance with some left over for food and other general monthly costs.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The flexi time policy allows for flexible working hours so outside social activity is easier to fit in. There are a number of charity events organised, as well as the Christmas party and a few other department events. The apprentices sometimes organise events and run some school events too.

  • 9. Would you recommend Leonardo to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The flexi time policy makes it much easier to work after work events into the day, and build up flexi days for additional holiday which is very useful. The general atmosphere is very pleasant and everyone is extremely friendly and approachable. There is a lot of support and recognition.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo?
  • Work hard on the initial online tests before the assessment day stage, but don't panic if you feel the tests didn't go well. Prepare well for the interview stage, the managers are trying to get an idea of your personality so the more prepared you are, the more relaxed you'll be.
