  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job as a whole is a Building Services Technician. The role of a technician means that every day is different. There are three major factors that I will design on a day to day basis which are mechanical, electrical and public health services. My daily tasks revolve around modelling within software called Revit and then also interacting with engineers to get there advice and information to make everything work. Outside of the office I have been to architect meetings, this is to get a better overview of the job and more knowledge so I know what is going on as a whole. I work on lots of different projects all at different stages and have also had the opportunity to play a very big role in one of these and be able to do a lot of the modelling by myself.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have definitely learnt a lot of new skills and also developed a lot of my skills that I already had prior to starting this apprenticeship. I have been able to take internal courses and learning sessions, these have developed my health and safety and my overall knowledge about the job. This job has developed me as a whole as well, my confidence and interaction skills have improved a lot through working with new and different people every single day.

  • I thoroughly enjoy this apprenticeship as it means i can meet new people everyday. Another big factor is that I'm never doing the same thing day in day out as the jobs change all the time. This apprenticeship has proved to be more than i thought it would be and it is enjoyable.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel that my apprenticeship is well structure. When I first joined I was shown what to do and how to do it properly, I also still can get help from many different individuals from around the office as they are all happy to help. Each week we have a catch up meeting where we can all see what each other are doing and how we can be as efficient as possible. I also get a good amount of time to do my external college work and any help if I am stuck and need pushing in the right direction.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary package is very fair, it allows me to cover all the day to day costs of life. It allows me to pay for housing, travel to work and back each day and also get my food. On top of this I still have some money that I can use on myself and socialising.

  • 9. Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Arup to a friend because they are overall a very good company. There are lots of opportunities in many different areas, for example travelling around the country and world, that I think are great to have within a company. Also they have a good salary and meet any needs that you may have, and overall they look after you very well.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
  • When applying to Arup for whatever role, just make sure you are yourself and don't be nervous. Everyone is very welcoming and the interviewing process isnt that bad, you are made to feel welcome and one of our own as soon as you walk through the door. If I had any advice it would be to look at the bigger picture, there are lots of opportunities within Arup. This could be from travelling or a job role change, what ever you want to do within the company you can do if you just work for it.
