  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

    • Mechanical Engineering Apprentice - Building various types of turbos - Fitting them onto test cells - Running various types of tests on them - Machining in the workshop (lathe, milling machine, pillar drill)

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

    • Qualifications - BTEC level 3 in engineering - NVQ level 2 - NVQ level 3 - Currently ongoing - HNC in mechanical engineering

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

    • - Day to day work is always different and enjoyable, interesting - Always learning new things both at college and work - The company treats everyone very well and makes everyone feel at home - All of the people I work with I can get along with no problem

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Cummins?

    • - I always get recognition when I have done something good from my manager - I am always involved in tasks and never get left to just watch people doing work, I am always made part of the task - I do feel as if Cummins values the work I contribute

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?

    • - From start to finish the programme is very well organised and you are always aware of your goals and what direction you are heading in - I get a lot of support from work for college work as we are allowed 3.5hours a week during works time to complete college work and we have an external maths tutor that comes in to help us with our work

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?

    • - Not as much support as I do from work but still an adequate amount to complete the course - Tasks are usually set out clearly and the process is normally easy

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?

    • - I get a lot of support from work for college work as we are allowed 3.5hours a week during works time to complete college work and we have an external maths tutor that comes in to help us with our work - We have Union representatives on site also which are always there to give you a hand when needed

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?

    • - I can afford to run a car by myself - Daily living is easily manageable for food etc. - I currently still live at home which makes it easier - Overall the salary is very good for my age

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?

    • - Cummins have a compulsory EEC programme which involves doing 4hours community service each year - We get a lot of offers to do with holidays, and shopping deals for example the Cummins reward system

  • 9. Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?

    • Yes

  • 9b. Why?

    • - One of the best places to work - Lots of opportunities both internal and external - Education opportunities for example HNC, possibly degree

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?

    • - Research lots about the company and make sure you understand how a turbocharger works
