  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Whilst being at Rolls-Royce for such a short timeframe, I have gained many qualifications, which form the Apprenticeship Framework, including a Foundation Degree in Integrated Engineering! I have also become very good at networking as it really helps in my line of work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme was a little difficult, as I was juggling being a mum of 2 young children with the full time apprenticeship. It has paid off though. I can't believe the huge variety of skills and experience I have gained throughout my apprenticeship. I also found that apprentices are well respected out in the business.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Rolls-Royce?
  • As mentioned, apprentices get a lot of respect. I never had problems with asking people questions...in fact it was encouraged. The company was very welcoming, with a brilliant Outward Bound programme which was great fun and helped me to quickly get to know other apprentices and form great friendships.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The learning programme had a clear structure. For the first year, everything was pre planned and I knew where I had to be from week to week. After that, I went out into the business as an apprentice and followed a placement plan which was developed to ensure I got a good all round knowledge of the Test and Measurement department.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Being a mature student, it was a while since I did any mathematics or physics. This was something I really struggled with. My training provider couldn't do enough to help me - I am absolutely sure I would not have made it without their excellent support!

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer funded my education. They provide a really good wage for an apprenticeship. As an apprentice, you are assigned a mentor, who tracks your progress and ensures you stay on track. If you are off sick, they make sure there is nothing work related that can be done to minimise future abscences, or if there is any way occupational health can support you.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Being a single mum has been challenging financially. However the salary is really good for an apprenticeship, when you couple this together with the education and other training provided it is very good.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Outside of work, there are various different things you can get involved in. One is the STEM ambassador program, which is aimed at encouraging young people to consider a career involving the STEM subjects. There is also the Apprentice and Graduate Association, who host an annual charity ball and many different discounted events throughout the year. There is an onsite gym and a bar where you can get food.

  • 9. Would you recommend Rolls-Royce to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Coming to Rolls-Royce has been an almost life long ambition of mine. I come from a poor background and an area of very little career opportunity. It has changed my whole life. I can now provide a good future for myself and my children, with an exiting career ahead of me. I am truly blessed to be where I am.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Rolls-Royce?
  • Don't ever give up! It is a challenging process and at one point I thought I was totally out of my depth! Make sure you do your homework about the company and our products & services. It is so worth it believe me!
