Tech Apprentice at IBM Review

So far I have worked for numerous people in different departments within the business. At this current moment in time I am working as an IT specialist covering a number of roles such as Application management, application development and software maintenance/programming. The current work i am doing i find very enjoyable compared to some other areas

I previously had some ICT skills and business skills before starting at IBM. I have been supported very well though in terms of education and have completed both internal and external training courses on a variety of subjects from Personal presentation skills to Java development which was interesting to me and something i would have never persued myself.

I have enjoyed the challenges and the opportunities I have had so far whilst working for IBM, and everyone of my colleagues have made me feel as if I have been part of the team for years. I enjoy what I do and look forward to work every day. In my current role i really enjoy the work so this motivated me to get up early and come in each day.

When starting new placements I feel as if each team have welcomed me in and gave me all of the support I needed to further my education and learning. Most of them have also given me responsibilities and treated as an equal part of the team. I have never felt left out or not given much to do just because i am not as well trained or experienced.

My programme, to an extent, is organised pretty well. Again, it depends on the department i am in to how the supervisors treat me and where they put me in each placements. I would have to say that most of the managers i have been with have looked after my wellbeing and ensure i got a good overview of their particular department and given me a structured programme.

My training provider gives me some support although this could be improved. I know my line manager likes to get updates on how my external work is going and if i am on target for my qualifications at the business. My tutor at college gives me the work however does not sit with me and discuss any feedback however i can always email for any problems.

I also have a mentor and, for the first few weeks, had a buddy that introduced me to the team and the location I was based.

Location/travel costs were not really an issue as I live a short drive away from the site. I think the salary is good considering that I am not even 20 years old yet, however there was a bit of confusion regarding how the salary would increase, and there was a few delays with increases too. The pay, i don't think, would fit too well with someone 5/10 years older looking for an apprenticeship

Yes i have been invited to numous activities and asked to support some open days for IBM. All IBM'ers are encouraged to do "giveback" and give up a day or two a year to help the local community through volunteer work. I have participated in a few giveback opportunities since joining and these can be both internal and external events. Sometimes you get merits or rewards for helping external events in your own time too.

So far i've enjoyed my apprenticeship and to be paid, whilst having your education paid for is awesome. The work environment is excellent, there are also opportunities both during the apprenticeship and after which anyone can get involved with. IBM is a great company to work for and there are many benefits of working here too. You will also meet helpful employees (some have also been through the scheme) that offer advice or tips wherever possible.

During the interview process remember to be yourself, be polite and try to ask some good questions. Regardless of whether you have prior technical knowledge or not, or whether you would like a technical role or not, don't be afraid to give it a shot. There are also some business roles within the company so ensure you know what you're applying for and whether that route is suited to your educational background and your likes and aspirations too.
