  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Job Title: Network Engineer. Daily tasks involve repairing pstn line remotely at a desk and repairing problems within the core network. Other daily responsibilities at the moment are to take Disaster Recovery Plan phone calls.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a variety of skills since joining, both personal and professional. My interpersonal skills have improved and so has my confidence in and out of the workplace. I have developed on existing computer based skills as well as learning more in depth skills on a computer. I am currently finishing my 1st year at university which at the end of a course I will have obtained a foundation degree in Science Computing and Information Technology.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • so far I have enjoyed my programme very much. The team I work in are very friendly and helpful. There is always something different to the job each day. Before I started I didn't know what to expect but if it could I believe it has passed my expectations.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • very valued. You are praised by Managers when you have done a good job therefore feeling valued for the work I have done. Being an apprentice there are certain jobs we cannot do. However we are still being encouraged to get involved in projects that are passed our capabilities just to be part of the team.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme I am involved in is structured enough to see my 3 year plan for my apprenticeship. There is plenty support at offer and there are regular support meetings. There is always time to study as we are allowed one study day a week.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • A colleague that is training myself gives me a high level of support. I know that he is there for guidance with problems in the workplace. And I know that is he is happy to help with I need support.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The manager again offers myself and all of my colleagues support when needed. If there is ever something that I couldn't go to my manager about then BT HR team and very supportive. However I feel like that if anything happens in the office I am comfortable enough going to my manager.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The 1st year salary meets my social, living, daily and travel costs. Also the salary at some months gives me a chance to save some money also.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • there are leisure and sports clubs beside the work that you could join. Also Bt have many company events that you can get involved in, especially if you are an apprentice. I have had the offer to travel down to the London BT Tower for a tour and also the BT Sports Studio.

  • 9. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • So far BT has been a very good company to work for. The atmosphere during work is excellent and the salary is a big bonus. As soon as I started working for BT I could see my career pathway falling into place which I liked.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Take your time through the application process. And be prepared for interviews and assessment days. If successful in getting the job then when you start be confident and be keen to learn.
