Advanced network apprentice Review

My role differs from day to day. Sometimes I'm outside working in all weather, or I could be inside an exchange or a customers premises. The work varies as well, with some being copper jointing and some being fibre splicing. I wont know what the job is until I sign on in the morning. I plan my day of where I am going and what tools/materials I will need once I have signed on. The best thing about this job is working outside in all weather, meeting great people who will help me progress and develop my skills. The best thing is the variety of the work. You will never be in the same place doing the same work twice.

I have learnt tons of skills. I have been put through countless training courses all over the country, expenses paid for. Also, I have been through an extensive buddying process, where I get put with engineers to teach me on the job working and mentor me throughout my whole apprenticeship.

I have massively enjoyed this apprenticeship program and at the moment, I am only 8 months into the scheme. I would highly recommend to anyone to start an apprenticeship with BT or with any company for that matter. The training you receive, the variety of the work and the amazing people I meet all make this so much more sweeter.

Yes. From the start, BT put a lot of trust and put a lot of money into you to make you the best engineer they can. They think of you as an investment, where as the more they put into you, they will get back with quality of the work you do. Its very confusing at first because there is lots to take in. But once you start to understand the work then they will start to put even more trust in you, and start sending you out on jobs to complete unassisted. They give you all the tools, phone, laptop and avan right from the start.

It is very well structured. The training is probably about a week every month or 2. They have a set schedule that you and a team of apprentices will follow in regards to training. They also have set days a month where you can progress your coursework with your apprentice coach who will guide you through all the coursework aspects of the apprenticeship.

A lot. as I touched in the last question. There are loads of people who can help you progress. Your coach. Your buddies. Your manager will guide you through most of the apprenticeship. Everyone is really helpful and always there to answer questions or show you how to do the job. the trainers on the course are always available if you need them.

They help you progress by pumping money and experience into you so you can develop anything that you require or that they say fit that you need in order to do your job with the highest quality standard. They want you to become the best engineer possible so they will do whatever they can to help you. Once your competent, then they will start to give you overtime if there is some available.

The salary is fantastic for an apprentice. If your on top with your coursework and the managers are seeing that you are starting to get good at the job. Then they will start to give you some incrimentals and pay increases to your salary. Also, if you do the overtime then your wage will dramatically increase as I have done in the past. I live on my own and do everything myself, and this wage is good to live on. But it will only get better.

They encourage you to do some charity work and they will pay you a couple of times a year to go and do this work. It could be anything that you choose from as long as the proceeds go to charity. Or it could be that you go to Africa or a third world country and do something helpful over there. If you are on top with all your work, then you also have an opportunity to explore the rest of the business until the end of your apprenticeship which is helpful because you may want to move roles at some point in your career.

Why? because of the fact that its is a fantastic company. There more you put into the job, the more you will get out of it. And they will put more and more investment into you if they see that you are capable and doing really well and on top of all your coursework. Plus, for me working outside is awesome and with everyday not being the same is also a fantastic part of the job.

Prepare for your interview well, because I failed my first interview and I was really upset because I wanted the job so much. The second interview I was successful and I haven't looked back. It is a career and a job for life in BT, as long as you don't lose their trust and start to behave badly. They are always employing so you will never be out of work. The network always need building and fixing which is another reason why you will never be out of a job.
