  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Whilst on placement at EY, I am classed as an assurance intern, the daily talks associated with my role vary from day to day dependent on what needs doing on the audit. I get a lot of interaction with my colleagues and clients whilst at work and have a sufficient level of responsibility to carry out my work to a high standard.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Without doubt I would say my communication skills in a professional environment have improved substantially. I find it much easier to talk to my colleagues and clients in a professional manner and build strong working relationships with them. As for skills, the scholarship programme I participate in helps put us through our professional accountancy exams, and so in the future I look forward to becoming a chartered accountant.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I get a lot of enjoyment from my programme, whilst on placement I managed to make a strong group of friends, and outside of placement as part of the university aspect of my scholarship I have met some great people and made valuable professional connections that should help me in the future. The company culture at the EY office is very strong, people know what is expected of them and all work together to achieve their goals.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • Very much so, I get regular interaction with the office whilst studying at university, for example, through new starter evenings, providing me with an opportunity to meet more new people at the office. Even when Im not on placement, I still feel like an EY employee.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of my scholarship is very good. We were provided with what was essentially a four year plan at the very start of our programme, therefore I have been well aware of where my programme will take me. Also there is a substantial amount of training and support available from EY over the course of my studies which have been another good aspect of the course.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We have regular meetings at University with our scholarship convener and have the capabilities to keep in regular contact with them as we see fit, or if we require any help.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel there is more than enough support provided by EY to help me have a successful scholarship period. Upon beginning our placements EY provided us with mentors who helped guide us through any queries we had about our role and what was expected of us, their attitude was good and they appeared to enjoy helping me whenever i needed it.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary is more than sufficient to meet my costs. I am fortunate enough to work in the office closest to me when on placement and so I am therefore able to live at home.

    8/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The EY office provided plenty of opportunities for me to interact with my colleagues in a more social setting as well is in professional company events.

  • 9. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have found the experience very rewarding. The scholarship path is without doubt the best route to go down if you're a student looking to get into the accountancy profession, the prospect of having a job at the end of university relieves a great deal of stress off the students shoulders and enables them to perform well in their studies.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • The application process does require a fair amount of thought. You have to want the opportunity that is on offer. Whilst at my assessment centre and interviews it was made clear to me that EY wanted people who were highly motivated and had a high level of enthusiasm about the field they were hoping to enter into. If an applicant is able to display this on the day, they will be in a good position.
