  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is mainly tax compliance related however there are elements of advisory and more technical international aspects depending on the client, client meetings and face to face contact are not frequent however are definitely utilised

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My knowledge of the financial industry has been the greatest increase. admittedly when I started I was almost naïve in thinking tax would be fairly simple. I was definitely wrong! other skills I have learned are grammatical letter writing, email etiquette and other general life skills

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • put simply, I love my job. There is never a dull week doing the same work twice, the changing pace and constant alterations to tax law mean that my job is constantly changing. although I still fell comfortable with my knowledge it is nice to be able to learn something new every week

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Grant Thornton?
  • I feel extremely valued. this is reflected by the pay and reliance on me to do my job. I am given independence and the freedom to work flexibly which I feel would not be the case in other firms. the internal recognition for my efforts is also satisfying.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I have had a few problems with my pathway however these have mostly just been unavoidable shortfalls. I would not blame grant Thornton for the issues and would highly recommend the school leaver programme to anyone interested.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Training at Kaplan is very good, the day release courses are invaluable and the out of hours support can be really beneficial, id choose Kaplan even if I didn't have GT financial backing

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Employer support is something I have not really used in my professional study, however the personal life support at grant Thornton is one of my favourite parts of the job. The culture really supportive of my needs

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Salary for a school leaver is very respectable, in MK it is the highest of all the top 10 firms which really makes me feel valued as an employee, other benefits such as mileage and expenses soften the blow too

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I have completed a marathon, a shooting event, a number of conferences and other technical events as well as promotional evenings, all of which were successful and I would not have had the opportunity to try without grant Thornton

  • 9. Would you recommend Grant Thornton to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • for me as a school leaver who couldn't afford university, working at Grant Thornton was a win win. I can earn a degree and double charter while earning on the job and with each added qualification comes a financial reward to match. Grant Thornton is the smartest career choice I ever made


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Grant Thornton?
  • Focus on making sure that your CV and application is as good as it can possibly be. there are lots of people applying for the role you want so you need to make sure that you stand out from the crowd.
