My role as an Automotive Electrician involves checking the electrical integrity of all JLR models whether by updating vehicle software through a laptop or diagnosing and rectifying electrical faults. I am part of a group of 8 electricians and the work we have is given to us through our group leader. It is also our responsibility to ensure we have the latest software levels on our laptops ready for when the vehicles come to us. All other devicess that we use must also be kept up to date weekly.
I have received the following qualifications: a level 3 BTEC extended diploma and a Level 3 NVQ. I have also done various in-house training courses regarding electrical networks used in the vehicles and have begun training to work on the Electric Cars that we will work on in the near future
I enjoy my job role very much, I work within a great team and overall the company is good to work for. The college training has been littered with problems but I believe that the college has taken steps to rectify this and ensure it isn't the same for future apprentices
There is very little interaction from the management with apprentices directly in my department and some things have transpired that have made me feel on a whole, not very valued. Again this seems to vary depending on which department you join. The company on a whole invests a lot in apprentices.
There have been countless issues with regards to the structure of my apprenticeship but the department and the college seem to now have things in place to improve this experience for new apprentices
Each apprentice has an personal Work Based Learning Manager who conducts regular reviews throughout the apprenticeship and is there to fight your corner and assist with problems that you face. This has been a very positive experience in my case.
The management in my department have not really provided much by way of support but the apprentice group leader in the department is excellent. He is very experienced in dealing with apprentices and offers all the support he can.
I am not your typical apprentice being married with kids, but the salary is very generous and increases every 6 months as long as your behaviour and work is at the level expected of you. Travelling to college in Leamington Spa each day in the first year was a challenge and the biggest cost incurred by the apprenticeship.
Each apprentice is expected to support Corporate Events such as career events at schools etc. throughout the apprenticeship and each year a you are given a pot of money to use for personal development which can be used on a wide variety of things from music lessons to kayaking.
Yes
It is a company always moving forward with an exciting future, the salary is excellent during and after the apprenticeship and if you desire to keep learning and progressing there are opportunities for you to do so.
While no previous experience is required, if you choose to go down a motor vehicle pathway then having some background knowledge and experience of vehicle systems will be hugely advantageous and make things a lot easier for you.
