Equipment Maintenance technician. Day to day I do a mix of jobs; regular servicing of equipment, as well as breakdowns. Each job has its own priority and it is important to take this into account. I am also involved in project work such as designing and making new equipment when required. I start jobs and follow them through to completion, obtaining quotes for spares and arranging contractors where necessary.
So far I have completed my level 2 PEO, and am currently working towards a level 3 NVQ and level 3 BTEC in engineering. As part of my department I also have had courses on equipment itself as well as health and safety such as explosive gases training. I feel my troubleshooting skills have developed, as well as general on the tools experience.
I very much enjoy the work I do in the department as well as spending times with my collegues. The company in general is good to work for as there isn't too much stress on us as apprentices - we are expected to make mistakes and its part of learning.
I feel my manager understands each of us as apprentices and appreciates us as so. In the department I also feel valued. I am happy to get involved with projects and feel I contribute towards them.
The training at work is well organised, with good support available. However, with college, our year group was in the transition between colleges and as such we have had to redo some work, and the tutors are not the most supportive.
I feel I have had a decent amount of support from people in the department, however, this is lacking from college. No fault of e2v, just we are unfortunate to be in the transition stage between training providers.
Support from my employer is great. Always happy to help, weather it be apprenticeship related, or department related. I have a mentor who regularly goes out of his way to help, and offers good guidance.
The salary is adequate as I am living at home, however, I would not be able to move out on it, even once qualified. However, life isnt about money and Im happy as I thoroughly enjoy my job.
There is always events to attend if interested, such as promoting apprenticeships at schools careers events. There is also company related trips to suppliers and meeting customers
Yes
It is a good start to a career in Engineering, and people are always willing to support and help. The hours are good - 7:30 - 3:15. There is a lot to learn, and the company has done a good job teaching me
If youve done any previous engineering or similar activites, be sure to mention it. I spoke about stuff I have previously made or fixed, and this made the interview a lot easier in my opinion as I was enthusiastic about the subject I was talking about.
