My role is an Design/Process Engineering Apprentice, I am tasked with designing jigs and fixtures to aid in the build of imaging devices that in some cases go to space and then using them to carry out device builds. My latest project that I actually built is going to be going on the next mars rover.
I have learnt a range of different skills both job skills and life skills. I have had to learn how to use a 3D modelling system to carry out the designing, as well as currently studying a HND in mechanical engineering and soon transferring onto the final 2 years of my degree.
I enjoy everything about my job, the team that I work in is great and I have made some real friends that I see outside of work as well. The work that I get to carry out is very interesting and there is never a boring day.
I have been fortunate enough to win a few awards for the work that I have carried out. Apprentice of the year, 2 Ferrari awards, college student of the year and 3 stars awards. These all make me feel very valued within my job.
My apprenticeship program is one of the best structured that I have seen from my research of other companies. We was able to trial every area of the business before deciding on a pathway. This was the biggest benefit to me as it made me swap from electrical to mechanical. We have monthly meetings with our mentors to ensure we are on track and getting the most out of our work. We are given one day a week to go to college/Uni and carry out our off site learning.
The college is the biggest downfall of the apprenticeship as our managers don't have control over what the college does. We are tying to find the best college to send or apprentices to however most colleges are the same where teachers don't really put the effort in.
My team, managers and co workers give me endless amount of support when I ask them for it or they see I am struggling, however I like to try everything before I ask for help as that the best way that I learn.
The pay isn't really aligned with other engineering firms and could be improved, however it is still a reasonable salary and we get a good life work balance.
We are given the opportunity to go into local schools and run engineering activities to get them thinking about engineering and apprenticeships in general. This has really helped me with my presentation skills as its put me out of my comfort zone and I have had to give a talk to over 300 pupils at once.
Yes
My work doesn't feel like work, I wake up everyday wanting to go in and carry on designing or building and for me that's a massive reason why I love what I do and I would recommend to a friend
Be confident and give everything you can during the assessment day. Bring anything you have done outside of work engineering related as it shows that you are really interested in engineering
