  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a controls and instrumentation engineer which leans toward the programming side of electrical work rather that physical wiring and cabling. My daily tasks are to assist the shift electricians with faults they cannot repair themselves. Other tasks involve a lot of programming for project work such as new installations or additions to original machines. My areas of responsibility are impregnation, Schelling saw and Tongue & Groove production lines but when on call I have to be responsible for the full factory.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The skills I have learnt are a good level in programming using siemens software but also wonderware and pilz amongst others. I have completed siemens service 2 course as well as an in house programming course to the level of service 1. I have an HNC in electrical engineering now also.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed my apprenticeship greatly. I learned a lot about electrical engineering in a friendly and engaging environment. the different people and teams I worked with were supportive when I needed it but also allowed me to work things out by myself for good experience.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Egger?
  • Egger have shown how much they value me by the responsibility they have given me. they have given me my own areas of responsibility within the factory showing that they feel I can handle the pressure. they have sent me to different factories both abroad and in the UK to be involved with company wide projects.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the structure of apprenticeships at egger is improving year after year with the management learning from each year what they can improve. Attending college through out all four years of the apprenticeship gives the technical knowledge to back up the hands on techniques and skills. with each year passed into the apprenticeship you are given more and more challenging tasks from Process training, to learn the various process in the factory, in the early years up to shift work in the final year, where you are given responsibility to attend breakdowns where there is more pressure to get the job done quickly

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • you are given support from the training provider throughout the apprenticeships as well as tasks to complete to show improvement. the training provider is also there if you feel any issues are affecting you personally in the work place.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support from employer is fantastic. if you feel you have a grievance that needs addressing they take care of it privately and with care and compassion. the mentors get to know you on a personal level so you feel they are more of a friend there to guide you than someone there to control you.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary is very good and subsidises my living costs travel costs and social costs comfortably. there are opportunities for progression through the company which offer higher and higher salaries.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • there are opportunities to volunteer for many things outside of work. things such as charity events for local charities such as the kielder foundation and egger are always willing to back any charity event you wish to participate in.

  • Yes

  • I would recommend egger to a friend because of its top quality apprenticeship scheme, the job opportunities within the company once you complete the apprenticeship and because it is a place I can see myself working for life


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Egger?
  • Come down to one of our apprenticeship open days to see what it is all about, you can learn first hand about the different aspects of egger apprenticeships whether its within the engineering department or the business side of things. work hard in assessment days and be confident.
