  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Advanced Practical Apprentice and my tasks are very varied but of course practically orientated for the most part. Tasks include making components using milling and lathe machines, undertaking welding operations, carrying out electrical based activities, and assembling components to contribute to a final product. I also attend collage which involves a lot of theoretical work but this is also really enjoyable as I am constantly learning and developing.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have developed my assembly and electrical skills and have learned new skills such as welding and undertaking non-destructive testing to name only a few. There have also been a number of courses that I have been able to attend e.g. developing my personal financial ability and driving safely. The variation of courses that are not only helpful for my career but also for me personally have surprised me in a very positive way.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Rolls-Royce?
  • The other apprentices and staff always provide time to help if help is required and I often receive feedback on my performance. This is a particularly good factor to the programme as it identifies where I have done well and how I can do even better which makes me feel valued and motived.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Most of my training is provided by my employer however for college a training provider is used. In areas that I have struggled e.g. maths, additional tuition sessions have been set up to help.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support and help is always available. Depending on the tasks being done it can be good to try figuring problems out without having to be heavily guided. The instructors do a good job of developing people and ensuring they learn. Upon completion of any section review meetings take place to ensure 2 way feedback can be given meaning that I am in a stronger and more knowledgeable place for the next section and may be able to work more independently.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I personally have had to relocate and have taken a salary drop in joining rolls Royce so the salary just about meets my needs. That said, fir an apprenticeship the salary is very competitive and the future potential is brilliant.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many opportunities outside of work both socially and career wise.

  • Rolls-Royce is a very rewarding company to work with as the work is very varied, interesting and the level of development and potential progression is excellent.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Rolls-Royce?
  • Do as much as you can to stand out from the crown in a positive way. Get involved in as many things as you can that relate to the role you are applying for so that you have plenty to talk about.
