  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a commercial apprentice there is a high level of involvement in daily meetings and tasks associated with the contracts. Responsibilities vary as competency increases and the contract the develops.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The core skills the apprenticeship aims to develop are those covered in the academic section of the course, through a HNC, HND and degree in quantity surveying. However to further develop skills there is an NVQ to assess competencies and a vast array of company training aimed at developing professional skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my program. The company has an outstanding culture where all of the staff are welcoming and helpful. This is supported by a passion for my work.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EDF?
  • EDF Energy hold each employee with the same regard and value everyone's contributions equally. Managers care for their teams, by continually supporting and trusting them.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The commercial apprentice programme has an appropriate structure which is continually developed. The inductions and training are well organised and good links are maintained with organisations who provide our qualifications.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • EDF energy implement a structured support system. From college there is a tutor who can advise with work, and at work there are mentors in addition to line managers in order to provide appropriate guidance in all areas.

  • EDF energy implement a structured support system. From college there is a tutor who can advise with work, and at work there are mentors in addition to line managers in order to provide appropriate guidance in all areas. Further to this the company structure means that there is a HR team who can also provide support.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As the place of work is Bristol living costs are extremely high compared to the rest of the south west. In addition to this moving away from home means I incur additional travel costs and salary is stretched to cover this.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • EDF Energy strongly involve their apprentices in a vast array of company events from corporate to social. As the teams are very close there are often further social events.

  • 9. Would you recommend EDF to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The opportunity to work and gain a degree at the same time is phenomenal. EDF energy are a fantastic company who value and support all of their employees.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EDF?
  • Be prepared for the application and assessment process. It is long and intense, but a great use of your time. Even if you don't get the position it is a invaluable process.
