  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a second year electrical apprentice I have been on 6 months of placements this year. I have been able to help with live projects and learn new skills which have really helped me to collect evidence for my NVQ.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During placement I have learnt many new skills such as, surface mount soldering, using new equipment including a vector network analyser and a spectrum analyser.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work is so varied that there will always be something that I enjoy doing. The work is not so difficult that I won't know what I'm doing, but is still changing.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Dstl?
  • I feel very valued by DSTL as they have just put me on a 4 day IOSHH course to improve my overall Health and Safety knowledge. We also will all get a recognised IET award at the end of our 3 year course.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is broken down into sections of 3 months in the second year. 3 months at the training school QATs then 3 months out in the work place to gain experience and hopefully find out what we want to do after we have finished the apprenticeship.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The tutors are very easy to get hold of when we have any questions. Even when we are away on placement we can email then a question and get a response very quickly.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If I have any questions I can email or phone my line manager and will get a response very quickly. If she is away there are plenty of people that I can ask in her office.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary has gone up this year so I've had enough money to go on holiday and still have some spare. The area around Salisbury is very expense for accommodation but is in a lovely part of the country.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There is a internal social club for all new starters. They go out on many days out to local interests which is great for anyone new to the area.

  • 9. Would you recommend Dstl to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Their salary for apprentices is very good and they have benefits such as we can start paying into a pension.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dstl?
  • I would look up the company as much a possible even though it is difficult to find information out DSTL.
