  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • 80% of my work (20% of my time is academic learning) is spent on the job as a project and portfolio assistant, which involves general admin support, but also producing items of work relating to project management - for example I have run a Lessons Learned workshop for an on-going project. I am into my third month

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am an unusual apprentice due to my age (38), however, this means that I have been able to bring skills I already have to the role, as well as learning new ones. By meeting and spending time with specialists I have increased my knowledge of project management

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work is interesting (and boring at times, but this is the world of work so there are tasks to do that are not thrilling!), the team is great and have been very welcoming and I am reassured that I already am a valued member. This has exceeded my expectations.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Civil Service?
  • Recognition by all members of staff - by being asked to carry out tasks when there are experienced team members available. Being looked after by my manager, but also being stretched too.

    9/10

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The learning aspect is not fully up and running yet and I am keen to properly get going. My manager is knowledgeable about the requirements of the programme and encourages me.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have not had to access any support yet, however, their offer is wide ranging and the workplace visit by the provider assures me that if/when I need support, it will be there.

    9/10

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Full support, not only from my team and manager, but I have had support from senior manager and external teams too

    9/10

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Excellent salary for a apprentice - considerably more than my last employment where I was unqualified but nonetheless very experienced in my role.

    10/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I have not got involved in much out side of work as I have a busy home life, but there are socials and events to attend if I want to.

    6/10

  • 9. Would you recommend Civil Service to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Salary, location & actual worthwhile and engaging work

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Civil Service?
  • The process is long and arduous, but stick with it. Be relaxed in the assessment days and let yourself shine. As with most things in the Civil Service, things happen at a glacial pace, so do not get frustrated!
