  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is in HR and I work on reviewing contracts, transferring officer over and I work with our service provides. I support projects, both long and short term, across teams and ensure we provide a high quality service.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am working towards completing the level 4 qualification for business admin. I have completed continuous improvement training and intranet uploading training. my communication and negotiation skills have been developed through my apprenticeship and experience.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy working with my team, who have been very supportive. The work stretches me and suits my working capacity. The culture at work is very positive and I feel motivated in my work place. This apprenticeship has met my high expectations and I have enjoyed the course.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Civil Service?
  • I feel like I am a valued team member, and I can voice my opinion. My manager communicates with me regularly and recognises my achievements. I feel like I have been fully involved with tasks from the start and I have been able to contribute to projects.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The induction was well organised and help my understand the scheme more. The support from my team has been very good. However the learning provider was poor and studying support/ marking was delayed. My talent coach changed several times which caused disruption. My HNC teacher was brilliant and supported my studying concisely throughout the programme.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • There was a lack of guidance with problems from the learning provider which made development harder. Support was accessible through my team and work colleagues. I have enjoyed completing the apprenticeship, however at times there was a lack of support from my assessor.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has given my allot of support from the start. My manager takes into account the qualification requirements when allocating my work load. My mentor has helped me to develop my competencies and plan for the future. My team has encouraged me and helped me meet criteria.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary package meets my travel and living costs generally. My cost of travelling is high as my office is located 25 miles away from my home. This means my social costs and daily expenditure must be low.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are opportunities to promote the apprenticeship and attend events to look at progression. I can voluntary up to 5 days a year to support the local community. There is a leisure/sports club which is available to employees and gives discount at various venues.

  • 9. Would you recommend Civil Service to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It gives you many career opportunities for progression and learning. There is a great diversity of role types and you can get experience in different areas of the business. The experience can help you move to different Departments or to another role within the current Department.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Civil Service?
  • I would recommend they spend time reviewing the application and vacancy requirements. Get a good night sleep the night before the assessment and be yourself. Take as many opportunities as you can from the start and take the time to meet your team. Networking is very important and the support around you makes your work easier.
