  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is Technician Engineer and since starting in September 2016, I have developed my knowledge and understanding for the role through learning from other engineers on site. My responsibility level has slowly increased with my competence for the role. I have overseen the excavation stage of the project, managing the volume of muck removed from site. This has meant me working closely with the Quantity Surveyors on the project. Having done this it has given me an insight into what other job roles involve. On a daily basis I help set out various aspects, as well as check through as-builts.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Concrete Technician course - so I am able to test and make cubes in accordance with the British Standards. I have spoken with my Line Manager and Project Manager about my personal development. I have set short and long term goals to aid my development.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I feel that I fitted into both the site and office teams very well. The programme has met my expectations, as before I joined I researched about. Looking at different sites, with opinions from previous participants.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Laing O'Rourke?
  • I feel valued as my team has the confidence to allow me to complete tasks on my own, and if I was not valued I wouldn't be able to do this.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Since Induction I think the programme is very well structured, key events/dates are planned and given out in advance. There are various support systems in place to encourage my development.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • If I am unsure about a specific tasks everyone in my support network is willing to help me. For example I can ask the other site engineers about university modules, but also ask the talent team if I am unsure about something specific with the programme.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have support from everyone in the team, including the Project Manager who sits down with me regularly to go through my aims and objectives.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Salary is good for an apprenticeship, but if my expenses were not paid I would only just be breaking even. Therefore it is good that the company can pay for my expenses, which allows me to save money each money.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • On a regular basis the talent team asks for participants of the programme to speak at events. I have helped at a couple which has allowed me to share my experiences.

  • Ensure you research well into the company and have a good understanding. When you complete any tests, ensure you use the resources provided - they are there to help you!
