  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Controls Analyst, no day is the same. My role ranges from taking minutes for meetings to creating documents to be used as part of Risk Assessments. I also manage the Data Loss Prevention Alerts (DLPs.) In order to maintain security of bank and customer information being sent externally.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have had the opportunity to develop upon existing skills in my role and also to learn new skills by completing internal training modules, attending external training events and completing the apprenticeship qualification. As well as learning on the job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have loved every minute of my programme. From the offset, I was welcomed in to the team and got involved with as many tasks as possible. I have even managed to exceed my own expectations by completing the apprenticeship in 7 months rather than 12 and achieving joint third place in the 2017 BPP Apprentice of the Year Awards.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NatWest?
  • I feel extremely valued within RBS. I have received a lot of positive feedback throughout my apprenticeship from Line Management, colleagues and my assessor which can be seen through taken ownership of very important tasks and completing my apprenticeship qualification early.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very structured from the start. There is enough information in place in terms of the application process, induction and studying. You have lots of support in place through Line Management and Mentors. As well as this, you are allocated a Buddy at the start of the apprenticeship which gives you someone to talk to - who is in a different area of the bank. During the Apprenticeship, you are also given the opportunity to volunteer to become a Buddy yourself which is a brilliant opportunity to gain mentoring experience early on in your career.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received a lot of support from my Training Provider. I was able to pick up the phone to my assessor at any point. No ask was too big!

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive regular support from my employer through regular meetings and 1 to 1s. There is also support available from the Early Careers Team in HR where you can ask them any questions about the Apprenticeship and future career opportunities at any time.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is great for an apprenticeship as it is well above the apprenticeship and national minimum wage rate.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • To date, there have been no opportunities outside of work. However, I am aware that there are now Network Champions in place which are currently planning future events for apprentices to network outside of work.

  • 9. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • RBS is a brilliant place to work. It has given me lots of opportunities to develop so early on in my career.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • One tip that I would give to other applying to RBS would be to ask lots of questions. No question is a stupid question and it really helps to enhance your learning and person and professional development.
