  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Oracle DBA still yet to go on a training course but I have a small involvement with a project, usually just handling stuff like creating users, making reports, exports and imports etc. I also have a secondment in Oracle KSOR which at the moment they are letting me handle requests through the mailbox and another application.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a bit about Oracle and how it works (basic knowledge) Learn how to use Unix and SQL within that, and had a few internal courses to teach me more about this. I have had a few QA courses (non oracle related) and taught me a few more things about windows, cisco, security etc. Also as someone who is a bit quiet they it has taught me to be a bit more talkative around others.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Work: The work is good but feel I could be doing more which is what I aim to do in the next coming months. Team: The team I am currently working for can be quite busy but they are good with helping me complete my tasks if needed, and good at showing me new stuff as well. Company culture: ITs interesting the events and news you hear in the rbs when reading about it, it is quite interesting. Expectations: my expectations where pretty low considering id joined from school so they where pretty much met. Did I enjoy it?: I've mostly enjoyed it. met some good people learned a lot of new things and skills that I can use, do have bad days where I do feel I can do more but that's quite rare.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NatWest?
  • My manager has given me feedback on how she feels I have been doing and from what I have been told I feel she is pleased with me, as from my colleagues within the team I feel they all know about me and will help me if I need it, I do feel treated well from them so wont complain. external from QA they are happy with my progress and they are always happy to give support when needed. as I stated previously I have had little involvement from 2 projects which are just small tasks right now, people do appreciate the small tasks I carry out for them so I do feel valued in that area.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The induction was well structured I feel, interesting things to learn about, had a good start as well compared to a lot of other apprentices. starting in my team I felt a bit worried as my line manager wasn't in and others didn't know what they were doing with me. took a bit but I feel they have trained me well for what I know. I feel supported by not just the team but the other apprentices as well as they seem to help each other out. I initially didnt get a lot of work thrown my way which is starting to pick up with my secondment and when I am back in my original team I am kept busy. Overall it was a messy start but I do feel it was well organised.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Despite a few miss communications I do feel that QA are very supportive of all the apprentices in the programme. they are always there to answer any questions or guide you through any units if needed. they always seem keen to help and never annoyed from what I have seen.

  • Manager: My manager is good gives me advice, tells me if I am wrong and gives me work, I do feel supported by my manager. HR team: haven't really had to raise anything with the HR team but when I have they have always been quick to respond to me which I am happy with. Accessibility of support: I feel its quite easy to get if you need it. Guidance with Problems: I feel that if I have problems I can go to someone to ask about it to get it sorted, people here are quite approachable which is good. General attitude towards supporting me: they seem to up for helping you whenever if they cant at that time they will say to you.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I was at school when I considered an apprenticeship and RBS was the first opportunity that came along so I went for it and here I am. I do feel if more came along though then I would have been told by QA.

  • 9. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel its a good working environment where you will meet plenty of good people. You can gain great experience from being here which will benefit you. Overall I feel its a good experience which you should try if the opportunity was there.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • The application process I felt was long but just keep at it and you will get it done, Remember to be well prepared for an interview and just be yourself and don't lie about yourself, also go into it expecting a new experience when I joined I was keen on PC building but was moved to Oracle instead which at the time was annoyed with but looking at it now I am happy with where I am at. Also if you feel you aren't happy with your team don't feel that you need to say there, RBS offers great career opportunities where you can move teams.
