  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • i work as part of core customer, I am charged with learning how to create and update programs within the RBS database. I spend most of my time writing or testing code or setting up plans to do so. I do this and also present my work to my managers to show my progress.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • my soft skills such as organisation and presentation skills have improved significantly and my technical skills have drastically increased. Primarily i am now somewhat competent in using an IBM mainframe to create programs that work with COBOL, SQL and JCL. these interact with database software and allow the different systems within the bank to communicate effectively.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I find my program very rewarding to be a part of and enjoy the tasks put in front of me. in the morning when I go into work I am lucky not to feel the sense of dread that many of my friends feel going to their jobs. I also feel that my career is developing and enjoy the idea that in a few years I could have moved up in life to an even better job.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NatWest?
  • the company has made a huge effort to make me feel welcomed and valued throughout my year and a bit working here. I am always listened to and respected and think people genuinely value what I have to say. I have received feedback from my line manager and other co workers that are always positive and encouraging. this comes together to create an environment that I feel values me.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the program that an apprentice at RBS follows is structured differently depending on department and line manager. my manager and department seems to be one of the more organised ones but many other apprentices I work with have felt much less structured and are often left to "get on with it" for extended periods of time.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • my employer ensures that I have sufficient training at all times and is always checking that I have whatever recourses I require. they have given me access to people who have a great understanding of the areas I work in and are supporting me in every aspect of the job

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I am paid an amount that gives me more money than I know what to do with. my costs in life are minimal as I choose to live quite a relaxed existence without having large regular expenses beyond rent, transport and food. this is more than enough for me personally.

    10/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • RBS has given me opportunities in both volunteering and clubs that can both take place outside of work. these are well advertised but I am not personally interested in most of the specific opportunities that are offered
