  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I joined the programme as a trainee manager, this involved the role as a department manager. I am currently sitting at a front end manager, this involves managing over 50 colleagues on a daily basis

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since joining the programme i have learnt a large amount of new skills as well as developing existing skills. Firstly it has really helped me to improve my confidence around new people, its done this by putting me into situations where i have had to just get on with it and communicate effectively with people i do not know in order to get the job done. I have learnt many operational skills that are useful to the company while i have been on this course. The main skills i have developed are my customer service skills, Tesco strive for excellent service and we are encouraged to live and breath it everyday. In my role as a manger i am also encouraged to encourage my staff to do the same; i have really enjoyed this prt of the experience. Overall this programme has been full of oppertunities for me to learn new skills and develop existing ones.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • At the start of my programme I really enjoyed it, there was lots of support, plenty of training, good communication between us and the programme leaders as well as lots of encouragement. As the course went on i feel the support, communication, drive from them and the continued training all stopped. There came a point where i feel the programme stopped since i was no longer getting these elements. Mainly no one kept up with my progress and i feel i was left to my own devises to support my own development.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Tesco?
  • Working for Tesco there are many benefits that make me feel valued, for example the 10% discount we get as well as the occasional 20% we get. Our yearly turnaround bonus that we have been getting. In my store that I work in i feel valued by my team i work with but from the programme i do not feel very valued.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme at the start was very well organised and structured. We had an indepth induction to the company and course, we then went on several different training days/weeks to learn and develop skills, i feel these were always beneficial. We could also get travel and accomodation booked for us therefore i felt it was organised. About 8 months in i would say the programme lost all its structure as there was no further training, updates or progression after the initial training.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • At the start i received lots of support from my training programme but as time went on i was provided with no support from my programme. I have been fortunate in the people i have worked with in stores since there has been a range of people who have been very supportive of my training. All different kinds of people have taken time out to support me with different skills.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I think the salary with this company is very competative, I like the idea that the harder that you work the more potential there is for your money to increase. At the monent i am happy with the salary i am recieving from this company compare to the costs i currently have.

  • 9. Would you recommend Tesco to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Tesco to a friend as a place to shop and work. To work for Tesco i think is really good, there are great benefits that come with it such as our discount, our turnaround bonus yearly, our pension scheme etc. Tesco is also full of great people; i have had the oppertunity to meet such a wide range of interesting people while i have been working for Tesco, both colleagues and customers. Tesco has so many different oppertunities for its colleagues to explore through its different channels therefore there is always somewhere for everyone in Tesco. I like how much Tesco support their customers and colleagues when they really need it most.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tesco?
  • I would recommend to anyone applying to Tesco to go into it with an open mind. I find that no two days are the same and that they can differ so much from day to day. Anyone applying needs to understand that there are really tough days where you will really need to work hard, to put in the hours and to do things that you may not really enjoy doing. But there are also really good days, days that are really rewarding, where you really feel that you have achieved something. To work at Tesco i think you need to be passionate, you need to care and you need to have great energy with both colleagues and customers.
